For over 40 years, Fort Bend Women’s Center (FBWC) has provided healing, hope, and support to survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault throughout the Greater Houston Area. As a United Way-funded partner, we help survivors build safe, independent lives through compassionate, trauma-informed services.
Our mission is centered on survivor empowerment, self-determination, and creating an environment where every survivor has the opportunity to heal and thrive. We provide free services to all survivors regardless of gender, race, age, religion, sexual orientation, or identity.
As an Operations Advocate, you will play a critical role in supporting shelter operations, maintaining a safe environment, and providing compassionate assistance to survivors during overnight hours. This is meaningful, high-impact work that requires empathy, professionalism, flexibility, and the ability to support individuals experiencing trauma.
What You’ll Do
- Provide crisis intervention support to clients and prospective clients.
- Maintain a safe and secure shelter environment.
- Monitor shelter security cameras and respond appropriately to situations.
- Maintain accurate shelter logs and required documentation.
- Complete shift transitions by reviewing notes, updates, and pending tasks.
- Support client needs while maintaining confidentiality and dignity.
- Assist with client transportation locally as needed.
- Organize and distribute client supplies.
- Support shelter cleanliness, including dining areas, common spaces, and outdoor areas.
- Assist with food and snack preparation and kitchen support.
- Respond to calls, emails, and administrative inquiries professionally.
- Update client information and communicate important updates to appropriate team members.
- Participate in team meetings and collaborate with shelter staff.

- Demonstrate strong teamwork and peer support skills.
- Understand the importance of self-care and preventing burnout in high-risk work.
- Be able to manage multiple priorities while remaining calm under pressure.
Required Skills
- Strong written, verbal, and non-verbal communication skills.
- Ability to follow procedures and respond positively to direction.
- Ability to advocate for yourself and communicate needs with leadership.
- Ability to adapt quickly in a changing environment.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, especially Outlook and Excel.
- Ability to complete accurate documentation and data entry.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required; some college preferred.
- Minimum one year of shelter experience required.
- Valid Texas Driver’s License and required liability insurance.
- Ability to successfully pass a criminal background check and drug screening.
- Ability to travel within Fort Bend and Harris County areas as needed.
- Comfortable working in an in-person shelter environment.
