OPHTHALMIC TECHNICIAN JOB DESCRIPTION
POSITION: Eye Care Technician – COA and non-certified
DEPARTMENT: Clinic
REPORTS TO: Site Supervisor/ Clinical Operations Manager
Job Summary: To perform necessary measurements and collect data from patients to assist doctor in medical visits.
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Previous medical assisting experience helpful, but not required.
- Customer service skills
Preferred but not required
- OSC/COA certification
- Ophthalmology/Optometry/Optical experience
- EPIC experience
Essential Skills:
- Exceptional communication skills
- Excellent computer skills, with speed and accuracy, while simultaneously working with patients.
- Ability to follow oral and written instruction
- Ability to keep information confidential and follow all HIPAA laws.
- Well-organized with strong attention to detail.
- Ability to empathize with geriatric, disabled people and patients of all ages.
- Ability to work as a team member
- Ability to perform duties at both standing and seated positions for periods of time
- Ability to occasionally ascend or descend stairs.
- Ability and willingness to drive to all Valley Eye locations and/or area surgery centers.
- The ability to multi-task in a fast paces environment.
- Participation in safe patient transfers is required.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Inform patients of the purpose of all tests being performed and how they will be affected during the process.
- Obtain patient history, medical background and family history
- Enter all pertinent information accurately and efficiently into the EMR.
- Assist with office surgeries in clinic or at surgical center.
- Assist doctors with patients as needed.
- Make follow up appointments as needed.
- Answer phone calls and questions from patients regarding their care
- Maintain medical equipment and have repaired as needed
- Keep exam rooms and back office areas clean and stocked with supplies.
- Perform other duties, as assigned.
- Expectations
- Become OSC or COA certified within 1 year
- Learn to refract within a 1 year
- Work as a team
HOURS:
- Monday-Friday
- Travel as needed
- Alternate Saturday AM clinics with other team members on sign up basis
- Staff retreats and employee improvement/education functions as required
