The City of Tybee Island is seeking a dependable and hardworking Water & Sewer Maintenance Worker I to join our Water & Sewer Department. This position assists with the construction, maintenance, and repair of the City's water distribution and wastewater systems, helping provide essential services to residents, businesses, and visitors.

What You'll Do
- Assist with the construction, maintenance, and repair of water and sewer lines and mains.
- Perform daily inspections of sewer lift stations and maintain records.
- Read water meters for billing purposes.
- Make water and sewer taps and connect or disconnect services.
- Locate and repair leaks in water lines and meters.
- Install and replace meters and meter boxes.
- Locate underground water and sewer lines.
- Install backflow preventers and assist with hydrant maintenance.
- Operate equipment such as backhoes, vacuum trucks, pumps, and other machinery.
- Maintain well houses, lift stations, pumps, and chlorine equipment.
- Restore lawns and repair utility cuts after service work.
- Respond to emergency repairs and assist other crews as needed.
- Maintain assigned vehicles, tools, and equipment.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements
- High school diploma or GED.
- One (1) year of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Valid driver's license or ability to obtain one for the type of equipment operated.
Preferred Certifications
Candidates possessing any of the following are encouraged to apply:
- Wastewater Operator Class License
- Water Operator Class License
Schedule & Work Environment
This position primarily works daytime hours but may require evenings, weekends, overtime, and extended hours to respond to emergencies and service interruptions.
Work is performed both indoors and outdoors and includes exposure to varying weather conditions. The position requires physical activity, lifting, and operation of equipment and machinery.
