Position Overview
PAH is seeking a confident and dedicated Veterinary Technician Student who wants to utilize and expand their skillset alongside our experienced doctors, licensed nurses, and support staff. If you are a student at an accredited program such as Iowa Western Community College, NCTA, Penn Foster, or other AVMA-CVTEA accredited programs and are looking for hands-on, paid hospital experience, this role allows you to maximize your technical nursing skills in a fast-paced, supportive environment.

Skills & Hands-On Experience You Will Develop
Under the supervision and guidance of our Licensed Veterinary Technicians and Doctors, you will practice and refine competencies including:
Collaborative Nursing Care & Patient Management
- Partner with doctors and LVTs in comprehensive patient assessments and clinical nursing care.
- Monitor and report on vital signs, behavior, and condition of hospitalized patients.
- Administer medications, vaccines, and treatments as prescribed.
- Support exam room flow by preparing patients for wellness exams, vaccine visits, and outpatient treatments.
- Administer cold laser therapy treatments and participate in client education.
Diagnostic Equipment & Laboratory Operations
- Collect and process diagnostic testing using modern in-house diagnostic tools:
- Full IDEXX Lab (ProCyte Dx, Catalyst One, SNAP Pro)
- SediVue Dx & InVue Dx (Digital Cytology)
- MindRay Point-of-Care Ultrasound
- Digital Diagnostic Imaging & Digital Dental Radiology
- IDEXX Reference Laboratory (fecal, specialized blood, urine & culture tests)
Surgical & Anesthesia Nursing
- Conduct pre-surgical physical examinations and patient assessments.
- Calculate drug dosages, place IV catheters, and practice intubation techniques.
- Monitor anesthesia and vital signs (HR, RR, BP, SpO2, ETCO2, temperature) using modern monitoring equipment.
- Maintain sterile conditions in the surgical environment and supervise post-operative recovery.
- Assist with dental radiographs, cleanings, and treatments.
- Assist with surgical procedures (spays, neuters, mass removals, foreign bodies, C-sections, orthopedics, and more).
Mentorship & Student Support
- Complete required program externship skill logs (e.g., ELMS by CORE sign-offs) under dedicated LVT/DVM supervisors.
- Support hospital flow and advocate for patient care in a team environment focused on helping you prepare to thrive after graduation.

Requirements & Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in an AVMA-CVTEA accredited Veterinary Technology program (Second year).
- 1 year of veterinary assistant or clinical student experience (Preferred).
- Strong communication skills, work ethic, attention to detail, and eagerness to learn are valuable soft skills for this role. These skills and qualities ensure accurate animal treatment, efficient teamwork, and a positive learning experience in a clinical environment.
