Ruby’s Café is a beloved, Australian-inspired café known for fresh, vibrant food and a warm neighborhood atmosphere. Our Williamsburg location is looking for a hands-on, passionate Sous Chef to join our culinary leadership team.
This role is ideal for a chef who thrives in a high-volume, fast-paced kitchen, leads by example, and takes pride in consistency, teamwork, and thoughtful execution.
About the Role
The Sous Chef supports the Chef de Cuisine and Corporate Culinary Team in all aspects of kitchen operations. You’ll play a key role in daily execution, staff development, and maintaining the high culinary and operational standards that define Ruby’s Café.
This is a working leadership position that requires strong line skills, organization, and the ability to motivate and support a diverse BOH team.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead daily kitchen operations to ensure consistency, quality, and cleanliness
- Actively work the line during service and support all stations as needed
- Train, mentor, and motivate BOH team members
- Maintain recipe accuracy and food quality throughout service
- Assist with inventory management, ordering, prep organization, and scheduling
- Collaborate with the Chef de Cuisine on menu execution and seasonal updates
- Uphold all food safety, sanitation, and NYC DOH standards
- Maintain a calm, professional, and positive presence during high-volume service
- Support a collaborative, guest-focused, and upbeat kitchen culture
Qualifications
- 2+ years of experience as a Sous Chef or senior line cook in a high-volume kitchen
- Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills
- Ability to multitask and prioritize in a fast-paced environment
- Passion for fresh, approachable, and flavorful cuisine
- Experience with kitchen systems including inventory, scheduling, and basic reporting
- Flexible availability including evenings, weekends, and holidays
- NYC DOH Food Protection Certificate required
