Nursing and Nursing Administration
Ideal candidate must have minimum of two years' experience in a clinical setting involving patient/resident care and/or Sterile Processing. Preferred knowledge of aseptic technique, sterilization techniques and procedures, infection control and workflow principles. Must demonstrate and exercise responsible judgment to provide necessary supplies and equipment for the patient care areas while working under the supervision of the RN Surgical/CS/OPS Coordinator. This position requires daily flexibility to perform responsibilities, possible on-call expectations and knowledge of routine policies and procedures and adherence to Safety, Quality and Infection control standards.
- High School diploma or GED equivalent preferred.
- Must have Sterile Processing Certification and be licensed as a Nursing Assistant Registered in the State of Washington.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification or must be obtained within 30 days of hire through American Heart Association (AHA) or equivalent organization.
- Preferred minimum of two years' experience in an acute care hospital or outpatient service area.
- Experience or training in instrument sterilization, infection control and workflow principles and preferred. Ability to demonstrate and exercise responsible judgment in providing patient assistance, necessary supplies and equipment for procedures/surgeries and patient care.
Sterile Processing Technician:
- Disassemble, decontaminate, assemble, sterilize, and store procedure trays, instruments, and supplies according to prescribed procedure and aseptic technique.
- Follows preference sheet to accurately dispense instruments and supplies to Surgery.
- Decontaminate, disinfect and/or sterilize surgical instruments in compliance with all established policies and procedures including infection control protocols.
- Inspect, sort, and process surgical instrumentation in accordance to policy and procedures.
- Isolate and report damaged and missing items to Surgical/CS/OPS Coordinator.
- Assemble and organize surgical instrument sets according to instrument count sheets.
- Prepare instrument trays for sterilization by appropriately wrapping or utilizing a sterilization container.
- Perform quality assurance and biological testing on equipment and documents accordingly.
- Operate ultrasonic cleaner, washer-decontaminator and sterilizers within established guidelines.
- Prepares and delivers instrumentation for use in surgical procedures.
- Approves or refuses materials from Sterilizer based on test results. Reports to management any adverse results.
- Executes proper procedures for equipment malfunctions.
- Responds to instrument and supply requests from clinics in a timely manner.
- Maintains a friendly, clean and orderly work environment and acts as a resource to other staff.
- Checks and reprocesses any expired items.
- Completes work from previous shift to accommodate department schedules.
- Accurately prepares and labels items for the appropriate method of sterilization.
- Maintains a working knowledge of all areas of the department by rotating through assigned work areas to ensure service needs are met.
- Assists in responsibility as a self-directed professional for continuing education.
- Dispenses and delivers materials via enclosed system.
- Communicates issues, problems and concerns to supervisor in a timely manner.
- Ability to use established communication channels in a professional, courteous, and tactful manner, when needed.
- Cleans all equipment after each patient use.
- Autoclave instruments for surgery, ER, Wound Care Clinic, Surgery Clinic, Morton Medical Center and Acute Care in a timely manner.
- Cleans ultrasonic as needed.
- Sterilize endoscopes according to established guidelines.
- Attends Surgical Services Meetings.
- Follows policies regarding patient confidentiality.
- Cleans cupboard shelves monthly.
Outpatient Technician:
- Assists with the care of patients in the outpatient and surgical area by performing routine and delegated duties according to the Standard of Practice and policies of the hospital and department.
- Assists with transporting of patients to and from OPS area prior to and following procedures, surgeries, diagnostic testing, hospital admits, etc.
- Acts as liaison for the outpatient service area to assist with bring patient to OPS area, assisting patients with personal needs upon admission and discharge.
- Sets up for surgeries and procedures with minimal down time between cases.
- Assist the OPS/OR staff to coordinate patient care and unit flow.
- Works with OPS/OR Coordinator to facilitate.
- Assists with endoscopic procedures.
- Keeps work areas neat and clean.
- Other duties as assigned.
