Job Description
We are seeking an experienced professional freelance Math Content Lead to lead a team refining and expanding existing Grades 6-8 Math and Algebra I instructional materials. This is a high-volume, fast-paced project requiring consistent weekly availability and a strong commitment to production timelines.
This role is best suited for independent consultants who can dedicate at least 30 - 40 hours per week to curriculum development.
The Content Lead serves as the critical link between our client and our internal and external development and review teams, helping to ensure curriculum quality, clarity, and alignment with educational standards. You will be instrumental in translating client expectations into developer guidelines and training, and in supporting production and QA teams, maintaining a high standard of excellence in all deliverables.
The Content Lead will lead one grade level within the Grades 6-8 Math and Algebra I range and serve as backup for the other grade-level leads. Backup coverage is included within the weekly hours commitment. The specific grade assignment will be determined based on program needs and the successful candidate’s background.
Key Responsibilities
Content Strategy and Assignment Flow
- Strategize internal assignment flow for the assigned grade level, in coordination with the Program Manager
- Lead the creation, revision, and management of content development and revision cycles for the assigned grade level
- Lead instructional design efforts for client development projects, assisting with the design of curriculum and products
- Sequence and distribute assignments so that production targets and scheduled deadlines are met
Quality and Compliance
- Ensure content quality and compliance across all deliverables for the assigned grade level
- Confirm that content meets established quality standards and review checklists before it advances in the workflow
- Verify alignment to state standards (TEKS) and the accuracy of standards citations
- Review content for English language proficiency support (ELPS) and confirm required coverage
- Support the open educational resources (OER) content development and review process, including preparation of materials, evidence of rubric alignment, and responses to review findings.
- Help develop and update content specification documents, style guides, and review checklists
Client and Subject Matter Support
- Act as the primary subject matter expert for the assigned grade level, including direct subject-matter communication with the client in meetings and in day-to-day channels
- Participate in and support client meetings led by the Delivery Lead, presenting and explaining content on assigned agenda items
- Understand client goals, standards, and expectations, and ensure their accurate implementation across the project
- Communicate client expectations and goals to internal and external development and production teams clearly and effectively
- Identify gaps or areas of potential confusion during content development and revision, and proactively seek clarification from the client or internal leadership to ensure alignment with expectations
Team Development and Coordination
- Support the onboarding and training of additional contractors and subvendor teams
- Provide ongoing support, clarification, guidance, and feedback throughout the project
- Maintain regular communication with the Program Manager, Program Specialist, and leadership to align project goals and identify areas of improvement
- Contribute to strategic planning as needed for the project
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor’s degree
- Professional knowledge of mathematics and current educational trends
- Hands-on experience in K-12 mathematics through teaching, tutoring, educational publishing, or content development
- Experience developing or revising K-12 math instructional content
- Working knowledge of state mathematics standards, including the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS)
- Demonstrated ability to manage complex processes and multiple concurrent workstreams
- Sound judgment and the ability to make decisions independently
- Close attention to detail and a consistently high standard for accuracy
- Outstanding oral and written communication skills
- Excellent planning, organizational, and problem-solving skills, and the ability to adapt to unexpected events
- Proven ability to self-manage workload, maintain productivity, and meet deadlines in a remote environment
- Comfortable both giving and receiving feedback
- Skilled in Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, and Adobe Acrobat, and confident in learning unfamiliar programs
Preferred
- Master’s degree
- Eight or more years of professional experience developing K-12 math instructional content, outside of or in addition to classroom teaching
- Working knowledge of the English Language Proficiency Standards (ELPS)
- Experience with the Texas Instructional Materials Review and Approval (IMRA) process
- Experience leading or mentoring content developers, editors, or subvendor teams
- Experience working as a freelancer or contractor, or in a production-based content development environment
