Job Summary
An Optometrist is a healthcare professional specializing in primary vision care. The role involves examining eyes, diagnosing vision problems, prescribing corrective lenses, and detecting certain eye diseases. The Optometrist ensures optimal visual health and provides guidance on eye care and treatment options.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform comprehensive eye examinations and vision assessments
- Diagnose refractive errors such as myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, and presbyopia
- Prescribe and fit eyeglasses, contact lenses, and low vision aids
- Detect early signs of ocular diseases (e.g., glaucoma, cataracts, diabetic retinopathy)
- Provide pre- and post-operative care for patients undergoing eye surgery
- Maintain accurate patient records and clinical documentation
- Educate patients on eye health, hygiene, and preventive care
- Refer patients to ophthalmologists or other specialists when necessary
- Operate optometric instruments and diagnostic equipment
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Doctor of Optometry (B.Optom / O.D.)
- Valid license to practice optometry (as per local regulations)
- Clinical internship or practical training in eye care settings
Skills Required
- Strong knowledge of eye anatomy and vision science
- Proficiency in using diagnostic and optical equipment
- Good communication and patient-handling skills
- Attention to detail and accuracy in prescriptions
- Ability to identify ocular abnormalities
- Compassionate and patient-focused approach
Preferred Experience
- 1–3 years of clinical experience in an eye clinic, hospital, or optical retail setup (preferred but not mandatory for freshers in some roles)
