Position Summary
The machinist will be responsible for setting up and operating machine tools to manufacture, repair, and modify parts and components according to drawings, specifications, and required tolerances. The ideal candidate will have experience with manual machining equipment and be able to accurately inspect completed work.
Responsibilities
- Set up and operate manual lathes, milling machines, drill presses, grinders, and other machine shop equipment
- Manufacture and repair parts according to drawings, prints, sketches, or existing components
- Remove, inspect, reinstall/set-up dies regularly for scheduled preventative maintenance
- Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and specifications
- Perform accurate measurements using micrometers, calipers, gauges, and other precision measuring instruments
- Maintain required dimensions, tolerances, and surface finishes
- Determine appropriate tooling, speeds, feeds, and machining methods
- Inspect completed parts to ensure they meet specifications
- Troubleshoot machining and product defects
- Perform routine cleaning and basic maintenance of machine shop equipment
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area
- Follow all company and federal safety procedures and manufacturing standards
- Work with maintenance, engineering, production, and other departments as needed
- Assist with repair, fabrication, and modification projects throughout the facility
- Coordinate materials, parts & repairs with commercial vendors for toolroom operations
Qualifications
- Previous machine shop experience
- Experience operating manual lathes and milling machines
- Ability to read and understand blueprints and mechanical drawings
- Proficient with precision measuring equipment, including micrometers and calipers
- Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work accurately with close tolerances
- Basic understanding of machining practices, tooling, and different types of metals
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Dependable attendance and strong attention to detail
- Ability to safely lift and handle materials and components associated with machine shop work
- Must be able to lift 50 lbs using proper lifting technique
- Must be able to read, write, and speak fluent English
Preferred Experience
Experience in any of the following is a plus:
- Certified Class-A Machinist
- Tool and die work
- Welding and fabrication
- Industrial maintenance
- Manufacturing environments
- Machining replacement parts from existing or damaged components
