Metalico Youngstown is looking to hire a Heavy Equipment Operator to go on the road with our mobile baler (excavator controls). This position will be responsible for safely performing the duties required to run our mobile baler offsite at customer locations with very little supervision, as well as performing the required daily maintenance on the machine. This job requires you to be gone for days to a week at a time for multiple weeks (home on weekends), to present yourself in a neat and professional manner to retain customer relationships, to load and unload the machine, and to load dump style and flatbed style trucks. The operator must be familiar with and adhere to the equipment’s limitations and always operate the equipment in a safe manor.
Essential Job Functions
- Visually inspect material on the ground as well as material you’re loading into the machine for non-conforming materials that could be hazardous to the shredder operation.
- Use the mobile baler as it is intended to be used as to not damage the baler or it’s attachments.
- Responsible enough to work on your own, out of town, with very little supervision.
- Capable of driving to customer sites, upwards of 3 ½ hours way from home location.
- Perform the daily greasing maintenance on the machine, checking out hoses for wear, and in depth daily once overs of machine to find possible future issues.
- Turn in maintenance work orders to supervisor for needed repairs. Be proactive in the maintenance of equipment.
- Comply with all company policies and procedures, including safety and maintaining good housekeeping.
- Performs other tasks as assigned by management on the road or when not on the road helping in the shop.
Qualifications

- High School diploma or GED is preferred.
- Industry experience in scrap metal is preferred
- At least two (2) year experience being an operator
- Prior experience with hand tools, preferred, but not required
- Ability to work inside or outside as required
- Attention to detail and accuracy
- Must be safety-oriented and exhibit safe work habits
- Punctual and reliable; good attendance is required.
- Good communication skills
- Carries themselves in a neat and professional manner.
- Self-motivated and eager to learn new skills; must be willing to cross-train on other equipment when not on the road.
- Ability to adhere to a work schedule when working offsite and inform management on obstacles when they present themselves
- Ability to adhere to Company policies and rules that are set forth; promotes the Company’s safety standards; works with a sense of honesty and trustworthiness.
Work Environment
- 85% of your time working will be out of town, if we are farther than 1 hour away you will follow the baler to the work location in your personal vehicle, help the driver set up, and be responsible for working a 7:30-4pm schedule (or follow the worksite’s hours if different), getting your meals and getting to your hotel (Metalico Youngstown covers your mileage to and from the worksite, mileage to meals and hotels, and hotel stays and meal reimbursement).
Work Hours
- Your work hours will be 7:30am – 4pm, or the work hours of your jobsite, overtime and weekends may be required to complete the job. Weekend hours will depend on the jobsite’s work schedule. Schedule is subject to change to facilitate business and production needs.
