Role Overview
We're an established, multi-state retailer with a stable footing and a genuine track record of developing our people. Our Benefits team is collaborative and central to the employee experience — which makes this an ideal seat for someone early in their HR or benefits career who wants real ownership and a clear path to grow. You'll learn the full breadth of benefits administration and cross-train into 401(k) alongside an experienced partner. This position is based at Big 5’s headquarters in El Segundo, California.
Key Responsibilities
As a Benefits Specialist, you'll help administer and support the full suite of our employee benefit programs, including:
- Health & welfare: medical, dental, and vision
- Savings & retirement: Health Savings Accounts (HSA) and 401(k) — cross-training provided
- Income protection: short-term and long-term disability (STD/LTD)
- Life coverage: basic and voluntary life
- Plan types: both self-insured and fully insured plans
Day to day, you'll:
- Process enrollments, life-event changes, and terminations accurately in UKG
- Serve as a friendly point of contact for employee benefits questions
- Support annual open enrollment and ongoing communications
- Maintain clean, audit-ready records and help keep our plans compliant
- Coordinate with carriers, brokers, and internal partners to resolve issues
- Cross-train on 401(k) administration and grow into broader plan responsibilities over time
What We’re Looking For
Preferred
- Prior benefits administration experience
- Experience with UKG Pro and PlanSource
- Familiarity with self-insured and fully insured plan structures
Core to the role
- Proficiency with Microsoft Outlook and the Office suite
- Comfort with learning and adapting to new systems and tools quickly
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy in data-heavy work
- An approachable, service-minded style with employees and partners
- A proactive, solutions-oriented approach to problem-solving

Salary
Pay Scale: $22.00-$24.00
