Job Summary:
As the Equipment Operator you will ultimately be responsible for operating heavy machinery in support of underground utility construction and excavation projects while ensuring safe and efficient operations. You will coordinate equipment usage, support field crews, and perform construction activities in compliance with project requirements and safety standards. As the Equipment Operator, your customers are broadband operators, utility providers, and internal construction teams, and you will make meaningful contributions to the company’s success through safe equipment operation, quality workmanship, and operational efficiency.
Key Responsibilities (Including, but not limited to):
- Operate heavy equipment in compliance with company safety policies and procedures
- Load, unload, haul, set up, and break down equipment and machinery safely and efficiently
- Perform regular maintenance, inspections, and documentation for assigned heavy equipment
- Operate equipment near active utilities while avoiding utility strikes and maintaining all required precautions
- Assist with underground construction activities including conduit placement, potholing utilities, concrete work, and asphalt placement
- Read plans and specifications, communicate with supervisors, and develop safe excavation plans around utilities and obstacles
- Additional responsibilities within functional scope based on business needs
Required Qualifications:
Education, Licensing, and Certifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Valid Class A CDL required
- DOT Medical Card required
Experience
- Minimum 1 year of heavy equipment operating experience in underground utility construction
- Experience operating equipment near active utilities and working with locate systems
Skills and Abilities
- Ability to safely operate asphalt rollers, skid steers, backhoes, mini excavators, vacuum trucks, bore machines, and related heavy equipment
- Ability to read and understand construction plans and specifications
- Knowledge of OSHA, ANSI standards, and company safety regulations
- Basic computer skills for reporting and communication
- Knowledge of basic shoring methods and rigging practices
- Strong communication and teamwork skills
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience operating Ditch Witch and Vermeer equipment
- Additional underground utility construction experience
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
- Stand, walk, bend, squat, kneel, climb, push, pull, twist, and work in physically demanding positions for extended periods
- Work performed outdoors in all weather conditions and around heavy equipment
- Must maintain visual and audible contact with crew members and equipment for safe coordination
- Must be able to work while wearing required PPE including safety boots, safety glasses, hard hats, and other safety gear
- Must be available to work additional hours and weekends as needed
