Ability Montana is a non-profit organization advocating for people with disabilities across southwest Montana. Our mission is to promote inclusion, independence, and accessibility by empowering individuals to lead self-directed lives. As part of this mission, we are seeking a Self-Direct Specialist to support our Self-Directed Personal Assistance Program for individuals who receive Medicaid-funded personal care services.
Position Overview
As a Self-Direct Specialist, you will support Montanans with disabilities who direct their own in-home personal care services. You will work closely with program participants to ensure they understand and manage their responsibilities as employers of their caregivers (Personal Care Attendants). This position requires attention to detail, and a commitment to supporting independence and choice. Our team serves fourteen counties through three regional offices, making flexibility, collaboration, and effective communication essential.
This is a hybrid position with a mix of remote work, in-office responsibilities, and travel throughout the region (approximately 25%).
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as the main point of contact for program participants and their Personal Care Attendants (PCAs).
- Provide training and ongoing support to participants on employer responsibilities, including hiring, scheduling, and timesheet review.
- Support participants in understanding and using the Electronic Visit Verification (EVV) system.
- Conduct in-home to assess support needs and provide guidance.
- Ensure accurate documentation and submission of participant paperwork and service claims.
- Maintain case notes and contribute to reporting for compliance and grant requirements.
- Engage in outreach activities to educate the public and partner organizations about the program.
- Identify service gaps and advocate for improvements within the home- and community-based care system.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in human services, social work, public health, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
- Strong organizational and communication skills, with the ability to work independently.
- Comfort with technology and systems such as EVV or digital forms.
- Valid Montana driver's license and reliable transportation.
Working Conditions

- Schedule: Monday to Friday, with some flexibility based on participant needs.
