Job Summary
We are seeking a visionary, collaborative Director to lead the creative development and production of Night and Day, an independent historical short drama exploring slavery through a bold, provocative narrative. The ideal candidate is an emotionally driven storyteller with a strong visual style, exceptional leadership skills, and a passion for character-focused filmmaking. Working closely with the writer/producer, the Director will shape the film’s artistic vision while leading cast and crew through pre-production, principal photography, and post-production. This is an opportunity to help bring an ambitious, socially impactful project to life with historical authenticity, cinematic excellence, and emotional nuance.
Duties
- Collaborate with the writer/producer to refine and execute the creative vision for the film.
- Develop the visual language, pacing, and storytelling approach in partnership with the Director of Photography and department heads.
- Participate in casting decisions, rehearsals, script discussions, and production planning.
- Lead principal photography while fostering a professional, collaborative, and inclusive set environment.
- Direct emotionally authentic performances from actors of all ages.
- Work closely with the cinematographer, production designer, costume designer, composer, editor, and sound designer to ensure a cohesive artistic vision.
- Provide creative guidance throughout post-production, including editing, color grading, sound design, score, and final picture lock.
- Collaborate with the production team to balance creative goals with budget and production schedule.
- Uphold the project’s commitment to historical authenticity, respectful storytelling, and artistic integrity.
Experience
- Previous experience directing narrative short films, feature films, television, or comparable scripted projects.
- Strong portfolio demonstrating cinematic visual storytelling and compelling performances.
- Experience collaborating with writers, cinematographers, editors, and creative department heads.
- Ability to lead diverse creative teams while maintaining a positive, solutions-oriented production environment.
- Excellent communication, organizational, and leadership skills.
- Experience with period productions, historical dramas, or socially impactful storytelling is preferred but not required.
- A passion for thoughtful, emotionally resonant filmmaking and collaborative creative development.

Dates and Locations
Production Timeline: Fundraising begins Winter 2026/2027. Pre-production will take place Spring 2027. Principal photography is anticipated for Summer 2027.
Location: Filming will take place on location in the Southeastern United States (exact location to be announced), with talent and crew expected to work on location during the production period.
Compensation
Compensation is contingent upon successful financing. $10,000 represents the anticipated maximum flat fee for the Director role; final compensation will be based on the approved production budget and role.
Pay: Up to $10,000.00 per year
