A Day in the Life of the SUD Counselor
As a SUD Counselor, you'll play a key role in guiding residents through their recovery journey, from intake assessments to hands-on treatment. You'll lead educational presentations and counseling sessions, help shape the substance abuse curriculum, and work alongside a team of professionals dedicated to making real, lasting change in clients' lives.
Responsibilities include:
- Providing relevant substance abuse information for class curriculum
- Facilitating didactic educational presentations, group counseling, and individual counseling sessions
- Selecting and recommending new instructional materials and programs for the substance abuse program
- Staying current on new developments in the substance abuse field
- Maintaining collegial relationships with other substance abuse professionals, programs, and associations
- Completing required testing, assessments, and psychosocial histories for incoming residents
- Participating in ongoing substance abuse-related training
Requirements and Qualifications:
- Counseling experience with a criminal justice population in a substance abuse program, or Alcohol and Drug Counselor Certification
- Ability to interact professionally in both individual and group counseling settings
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Strong teamwork skills with the ability to implement team-based strategies
- Comfortable working with computers and department-standard software
- Bilingual skills (English/Spanish) may be required, along with experience working with specific cultural groups
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
- Ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously
- Knowledge of client record management
- Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug test and an enhanced background check
