Position Summary
The Developmental Trainer (Direct Support Professional) is responsible for providing direct, person-centered support to adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities enrolled in the Community Day Service Program. This position focuses on skill development, community integration, vocational training, and the implementation of individualized service plans to promote independence, choice, and meaningful participation in daily programming.
Developmental Trainers are essential members of the interdisciplinary team and are expected to uphold agency policies, Illinois Rule 119 standards, and all regulatory requirements while ensuring the health, safety, dignity, and rights of individuals served.
Direct Support & Skill Development
- Provide hands-on instruction and supervision in daily programming activities, including functional life skills, communication, social skills, and vocational training.
- Support individuals in achieving outcomes outlined in their Personal Plans, Behavior Plans, and Implementation Strategies.
- Facilitate structured activities that promote independence, community participation, and skill acquisition.
- Provide assistance with activities of daily living (ADLs) as needed, while encouraging maximum independence.
Community & Vocational Engagement
- Support individuals during community outings, volunteer opportunities, and supported employment activities.
- Ensure safe and appropriate supervision in community settings.
- Model appropriate social interactions and workplace behaviors.
Documentation & Compliance
- Complete accurate and timely daily service notes, data collection, attendance records, and incident reports.
- Collect and record objective data related to goal progress and behavioral support plans.
- Maintain confidentiality and adhere to HIPAA and agency documentation standards.
- Participate in required trainings, including OIG Rule 50, abuse/neglect prevention, CPR/First Aid, and other state-mandated trainings.
Health, Safety & Rights
- Ensure the physical safety and emotional well-being of individuals at all times.
- Follow all safety protocols, emergency procedures, and behavior intervention strategies.
- Protect and promote individual rights, dignity, and self-advocacy.
- Report incidents, injuries, or suspected abuse/neglect immediately in accordance with agency and state requirements.
Mandatory Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required; some college coursework in human services preferred.
- Must be at least 20 years of age.
- Ability to pass required background checks, including OIG and sex offender registry.
- Strong communication, problem-solving, and teamwork skills.
- Compassionate, patient, and dedicated to supporting individuals with disabilities.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working with adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
- Experience in a Community Day Service program, CILA, group home, or similar setting.
- Knowledge of person-centered planning and behavior support strategies.
- Experience supporting individuals with autism spectrum disorder or other developmental disabilities.
