Industrial Equipment Controls/Applications Engineer

Summary
Reliant Finishing Systems manufactures industrial ovens, paint booths, blast enclosures, pretreatment washers, and related equipment for powder coating, industrial painting, and thermal processing. This equipment is installed and supported by factory personnel. Reliant has been in business since 2005 and has thousands of products in operation across North America.
Reliant is seeking a Controls Engineer to drive the development and support of our equipment’s electrical controls, heat and air handling systems, instrumentation, and automation.
The successful candidate will work from our facility in Somerville, Alabama. They will collaborate with project management, engineering, sales, and customer support teams. They will be involved with product design/improvement and technical support tasks on a daily basis, and will help specify outsourced components, select vendors, and keep projects on track.
This is a hands-on position with limited travel to project sites. The ideal candidate will be comfortable developing and troubleshooting controls that utilize PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, and various sensors. They will work extensively with gas-fueled heat systems and unique air handling systems for large-scale ovens and related equipment.
Job Duties
Support the design and implementation of control systems for industrial ovens, washers, conveyors, booths, and automated finishing systems.
Review and create electrical schematics, panel drawings, I/O lists, device lists, and sequences of operation.
Develop, edit, troubleshoot, and support PLC and HMI programming.
Remotely support field start-up, commissioning, and customer troubleshooting issues, and help service technicians and installers diagnose equipment problems.
Work effectively with vendors, customers, contractors, and internal departments in a professional manner.
Follow through on assigned work without supervision.
Communicate clearly when problems are found.
Help production personnel and panel builders resolve controls-related issues during the design & build process.
Assist with testing equipment before shipment.
Document control system changes, troubleshooting steps, and lessons learned.
Help improve Reliant’s controls standards, panel documentation, start-up checklists, and service procedures.
Occasionally provide on-site support at project locations in the U.S. and Canada.
Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, controls engineering, industrial automation engineering, mechatronics/electromechanical engineering, or mechanical engineering with a concentration in controls or mechatronics.
5+ years of direct experience working with industrial controls, PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, sensors, motor controls, instrumentation, and electrical troubleshooting.
Experience reading and creating electrical schematics, control panel drawings, equipment manuals, and sequences of operation.
Understanding of basic heating and air handling devices.
Understanding of industrial equipment and manufacturing environments.
Excellent attention to detail.
Excellent ability to work with engineering, production, installation, and service personnel, as well as vendors and customers.
Excellent ability to self-manage assigned tasks and communicate status clearly.
Strong ability to troubleshoot equipment safely and methodically, both in person and remotely.
Strong general written and verbal communication skills.
Strong customer relationship skills.
Good attendance, dependability, and punctuality.
Ability to use email, Microsoft Office, cloud-shared files, and related business software.
Ability to occasionally support start-up or service issues in the field.
Preferred Experience
10+ years of relevant controls, instrumentation, automation, maintenance, or industrial equipment experience.
Experience with industrial ovens, burner systems, flame safety systems, gas trains, or thermal process equipment.
Experience with UL 508A control panels, NEC, NFPA 79, NFPA 86, NFPA 33 or similar electrical and equipment safety standards.
Experience with Allen-Bradley, Siemens, or similar PLC platforms.
Experience in a custom equipment, OEM, systems integrator, fabrication, system maintenance, or industrial machinery environment.
Experience supporting equipment start-ups, performance audits, field service, commissioning, or customer troubleshooting.
Military technical training in electronics, electrical systems, controls, instrumentation, industrial maintenance, or related technical fields.
Hands-on equipment support/maintenance experience in large industrial facilities, manufacturing plants, utilities, or similar environments.

Compensation
Pay range is $90,000 to $120,000 per year, depending on experience.
Candidates with specific controls experience, troubleshooting ability, field support experience, and 10 or more years of relevant work history will be considered at the top of the range.
