We are seeking a Process Controls Engineer to join our Engineering team in Westminster, Colorado. This position requires regular in-office attendance. Candidates must reside within a reasonable commuting distance of the office. In this role, you will design, program, test, commission, and support automated water treatment and environmental remediation systems used by municipalities and industrial customers throughout the United States.
Unlike larger organizations where engineers are limited to a single phase of a project, our engineers are involved from concept and design through programming, startup, commissioning, and long-term customer support. This role offers the opportunity to take ownership of projects, develop broad technical expertise, and make a direct impact on critical water infrastructure.
What You'll Do
As a Process Controls Engineer, you will design and implement control systems that help deliver safe, reliable water treatment solutions.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and implement control systems for municipal and industrial water treatment facilities.
- Develop and maintain Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) and control system documentation.
- Create electrical interconnection drawings, I/O lists, wiring diagrams, and control narratives.
- Design and support electrical control panels for water treatment equipment.
- Develop, modify, test, and troubleshoot PLC programs.
- Configure, maintain, and support HMI and SCADA applications.
- Perform control system testing, simulation, validation, and troubleshooting.
- Lead startup and commissioning activities for new installations.
- Perform wiring verification, loop checks, and field troubleshooting.
- Support project planning, proposal development, and controls scope definition.
- Serve as the primary controls engineering contact for assigned projects following startup.
- Support customers through troubleshooting, optimization, program updates, and system improvements.
- Collaborate with Engineering, Project Management, and Field Services teams to ensure successful project execution.
- Assist in developing and improving company controls standards and best practices.
- Provide technical guidance to junior engineers, technicians, and interns as needed.
Travel Requirements
This position includes travel to customer sites throughout the United States.
- Up to 40% travel during onboarding and training
- Approximately 20–30% travel thereafter
Travel may include startup support, commissioning, troubleshooting, and customer training activities.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Automation Engineering, or a related technical field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- 2+ years of experience in industrial automation, controls engineering, electrical design, or process controls.
- Experience developing, modifying, and troubleshooting PLC and HMI applications in industrial environments.
- Experience with industrial PLC platforms such as Allen-Bradley ControlLogix, CompactLogix, Studio 5000, Schneider Electric, Siemens, or similar systems.
- Experience with industrial HMI/SCADA platforms such as FactoryTalk View, InduSoft, Ignition, Wonderware, Vijeo Designer, or similar systems.
- Familiarity with industrial communication protocols including EtherNet/IP, Modbus, or similar networks.
- Ability to troubleshoot electrical and controls-related systems independently.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, P&IDs, and control panel drawings.
- Strong communication and customer-facing skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
- Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
- Ability to pass a physical examination, background check, and drug screening.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Allen-Bradley Studio 5000 and FactoryTalk View.
- Experience creating AutoCAD drawings, including P&IDs and electrical interconnection drawings.
- Experience commissioning industrial control systems.
- Experience with municipal drinking water treatment, groundwater treatment, wastewater treatment, or environmental remediation systems.
- Familiarity with instrumentation including flow meters, pressure transmitters, level instruments, analyzers, and variable frequency drives (VFDs).
- Knowledge of industrial electrical systems and control panel design.
