This is a year-round, full-time, field-based position for a detail-oriented professional who takes pride in precise, high-quality work. You’ll spend your days outdoors and in the field across the Wasatch Front and Wasatch Back, working with state-of-the-art fusion splicing and test equipment on an expanding fiber-to-the-home network — an exciting, high-demand trade in one of the fastest-growing industries in the state.
Responsibilities

Perform fusion splicing of single-fiber and ribbon/mass fiber optic cables in underground, buried, and aerial environments, including mid-sheath (ring-cut) splices

Prepare, clean, and cleave fiber; dress and secure fibers into splice trays; build and seal splice closures, cases, and fiber termination panels per design and company standards

Place and repair aerial and underground splice closures and a variety of other enclosures common to fiber splicing and termination

Terminate fiber and install connectors/pigtails (e.g., SC/LC, APC/UPC) and FTTH components such as MSTs, NIDs, and ONTs as required

Test and certify completed splices and fiber spans using OTDRs, optical power meters, light sources, and visual fault locators (VFLs); retrieve and interpret OTDR traces, calculate splice/insertion loss, and identify faults

Read and interpret splice records, fiber color codes, prints, maps, and engineering/construction drawings, and splice in accordance with those records

Troubleshoot and repair fiber network issues (signal loss, fiber breaks, outages), including emergency restoration work

Maintain accurate splicing documentation, as-builts, photos, daily paperwork, and bills of materials

Safely operate company vehicles, bucket trucks, ladders, and assorted hand tools; maintain and account for assigned tools and equipment (e.g., Fujikura/Sumitomo fusion splicers)

Work safely around live utilities and traffic; comply with 811 locating, traffic control, confined-space, OSHA, NESC, and company safety procedures

Coordinate professionally with crew members, supervisors, and customers; perform other duties as directed by the Foreman/Construction Manager

Must be 21 years of age or older (required)

Valid driver’s license with a clean/acceptable driving record (required)

DOT medical card may be required to operate company vehicles

High school diploma or GED (required)

Demonstrated ability to fusion splice both loose-tube and ribbon fiber optic cables (required)

Proficiency with fiber splicing, testing, and troubleshooting tools and materials, including OTDRs, power meters, and light sources, and the ability to interpret OTDR traces (required)

Knowledge of fiber types and the fiber optic color code; ability to read prints, splice diagrams, and maps (required)

Minimum 1–3 years of fiber splicing or related telecom/OSP construction experience (entry-level/apprentice candidates with relevant training may be considered for a junior level)

FOA CFOT or CFOS (Splicing/OSP) certification, BICSI, and/or OSHA 10/30 a plus
-
Experience with mass/ribbon fusion splicers and high-count fiber a plus

Ability to splice outdoors in all weather conditions and lift/move up to 50 lbs

Ability to work in confined spaces (manholes, vaults, handholes) and at heights from ladders/aerial lifts
-
Strong attention to detail, organization, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team

Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including occasional nights/weekends and emergency restoration calls

Ability to pass a background check and pre-employment/DOT drug screen
