Adams Steel Service & Supply is a steel service center and fabrication shop in McHenry, IL. We are looking for an experienced CNC operator / fabricator to run our cutting operation: an OMAX waterjet and a Hypertherm plasma table. The work is custom one-off and short-run parts, not production runs, so the jobs change every day and you will own the process from drawing to finished part.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Program, set up, and operate an OMAX waterjet and a Hypertherm plasma table
- Program waterjet jobs by hand at the machine (we do not auto-nest waterjet work)
- Draw and detail parts in CAD (Rhino, Fusion 360, Advance Steel), including reverse-engineering worn or broken parts customers bring in without drawings
- Perform routine maintenance, consumable changes, troubleshooting, and repairs on both machines, with vendor support available
- Inspect finished parts against drawing specifications
- Work directly with the owner and a small shop crew
QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience programming and operating CNC cutting equipment (waterjet, plasma, or laser)
- Sheet metal or steel fabrication shop background
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings, with solid shop math
- Strong mechanical aptitude, comfortable diagnosing and fixing the equipment you run
- Note: CNC milling or turning experience alone is not a fit. This is cutting-table work, a different skillset
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and stand for extended periods
PREFERRED (A PLUS, NOT REQUIRED)
- OMAX / Intelli-MAX experience is a strong plus. Waterjet controls do not transfer between brands, so if you have OMAX time, say so. The right fabricator without it will be trained on our machine
- Hypertherm plasma experience
- Reverse-engineering experience (measuring a worn part and modeling it for cutting)
- Rhino, Fusion 360, or Advance Steel (SolidWorks or AutoCAD experience crosses over)
IDEAL CANDIDATE
- Takes pride in custom, one-off work and problem solving over running the same part all day
- Self-sufficient: can take a job from a customer sketch or sample to a finished part
- Wants to own a whole operation rather than one station on a line

Pay: $28.00 – $32.00 per hour, depending on experience
