POSITION TITLE: Wastewater Treatment Operator (Class I)

SALARY: $22.00 per hour, including medical and OPERS benefits
FSLA STATUS: Non-exempt (Full-time, hourly)
LOCATION: Village of Geneva-on-the-Lake
GENERAL PURPOSE:
The Wastewater Treatment Operator (Class 1) performs skilled technical, operational, laboratory, and preventive maintenance duties required for the continuous, compliant operation of the Village’s wastewater treatment facility and sewage collection system.
Working with an established degree of independence under the general supervision and technical direction of the Public Works Superintendent (acting as primary Operator of Record), the Class 1 Operator conducts process control testing, maintains regulatory operational logs, operates specialized utility machinery pursuant to Ohio Administrative Code (OAC) 3745-7.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Participate in the work for the operation and maintenance of the sanitary sewer system, wastewater treatment plant, sanitary collection infrastructure, sewage pump stations and related equipment
- Monitors meters, gauges, SCADA panels, and digital telemetry to track flow rates, dissolved oxygen levels, pH, tank levels, and pump run-times; adjusts chemical feed pumps based on laboratory testing results and direction from the Operator of Record
- Collects raw influent, mixed liquor, and final effluent composite and grab samples in strict accordance with Ohio EPA and NPDES permit sampling protocols; conducts daily in-house laboratory analyses; accurately logs raw laboratory bench data and prepares daily operating logs for review
- Calibrates, cleans, and maintains laboratory testing probes, instruments, and glassware to uphold Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) standards
- Performs scheduled physical and mechanical inspections of all Village sewage lift stations, verifying pump efficiency, float controls, telemetry alarms, and emergency standby generators; operates high-pressure sewer jetting trucks and vacuum equipment to clean collection mains, clear grease or root blockages, and execute routine preventative line flushing
- Executes routine preventive maintenance on pumps, electric motors, blowers, drives, valves, and mechanical screens (greasing bearings, changing oil, checking seals)
- Maintains plant grounds and facility structures, including snow removal around tank walkways, lawn care, painting, and housekeeping
- Support other Public Works taskings and other sections or departments within the Village as required, such as secondary assistance to the Street Department during severe winter weather snow-plowing emergencies or major municipal infrastructure repair.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS
- Education: High School Diploma or GED equivalent required. (Basic coursework in math, chemistry, biology, or algebra is helpful).
- Experience: Mechanical aptitude, hand tool familiarity, or exposure to manual labor/construction is preferred.
- License: Ohio EPA Class I Wastewater Treatment license; valid driver’s license
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
- Operations, services, and activities of a municipal wastewater treatment program and associated infrastructure
- Principles, practices, materials, chemicals and operating procedures related to the operation and maintenance of a modern wastewater treatment plant
- Methods and techniques of conducting laboratory tests and procedures related to water and wastewater treatment analysis.
- Operate modern office equipment including computers to manage data and control the operation of automated equipment
- Tools, equipment and procedures used in the operation and maintenance of wastewater treatment plant and pumping facilities.
- Emergency maintenance and repair procedures related to wastewater treatment facilities, sanitary sewer collection systems, storm drainage systems and street infrastructure
- Maintain accurate and detailed logs and records of work and laboratory tests performed
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

- Work is performed in both indoor laboratory environments and outdoor field conditions under all extreme weather conditions (heat, freezing cold, rain, snow)

- May be required to work extended hours including evenings and weekends and to travel outside municipal boundaries to attend trainings or meetings.
- Availability to assist with emergency high-water calls, severe winter weather, or utility equipment failures following initial training
