Product Engineer I, RF/Microwave Module Products
Position Summary
Do you find RF, microwave, and millimeter-wave engineering fascinating? Are you curious about what happens inside an amplifier, frequency converter, receiver, or other complex RF module when its measured performance does not match expectations? Do you enjoy combining hands-on laboratory work with careful data analysis and practical problem solving?
MACOM is seeking an entry-level Product Engineer to support the introduction and manufacture of complex RF, microwave, and millimeter-wave module products at our Nashua, New Hampshire facility.
As a Product Engineer I, you will work with experienced engineers to help transition new products from engineering development into manufacturing. You will gain hands-on experience with RF measurements, production test systems, test fixtures, data analysis, troubleshooting, yield improvement, and manufacturing documentation. You will collaborate with Design Engineering, Test Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, Reliability, and Operations while developing a broad understanding of how advanced RF products are designed, tested, built, and successfully released to production.
This is an excellent opportunity for an engineer who wants to build a career around fascinating RF technology while learning how sophisticated electronic products move from prototype hardware to repeatable production.
What You Will Do
• With guidance and mentoring from experienced engineers, you will:
• Support the introduction of new RF, microwave, and millimeter-wave module products into manufacturing.
• Assist in developing production test plans that verify electrical performance and product requirements.
• Set up and perform RF and DC measurements using equipment such as vector network analyzers, spectrum analyzers, signal generators, power meters, oscilloscopes, and digital multimeters.
• Learn to configure and troubleshoot RF test setups, cables, adapters, fixtures, power supplies, control interfaces, and supporting hardware.
• Assist with the design, assembly, documentation, and debugging of RF test boards and fixtures.
• Collect, organize, visualize, and analyze engineering and production test data.
• Support correlation between engineering characterization and manufacturing test results.
• Help identify the causes of test failures, unexpected performance, and low-yield conditions.
• Review electrical schematics, mechanical drawings, assembly drawings, test procedures, and bills of materials.
• Assist with product characterization over frequency, temperature, power, bias, and other operating conditions.
• Help prepare test procedures, characterization reports, production instructions, and product-release documentation.
• Participate in design reviews, manufacturing reviews, yield reviews, and technical problem-solving meetings.
• Work directly with technicians and engineers in a hands-on laboratory and manufacturing environment.
• Support continuous improvement of product quality, test repeatability, and manufacturing efficiency.
• Learn statistical techniques used to establish test limits, evaluate variation, and monitor production performance.
• Contribute to a cooperative team environment in which engineers share knowledge and help one another solve difficult technical problems.
What You Will Learn
In this role, you will gain experience in:
• RF, microwave, and millimeter-wave measurements.
• Complex multi-chip modules and integrated microwave assemblies.
• Production test methods and automated test equipment.
• New Product Introduction and manufacturing release.
• Yield analysis and root-cause investigation.
• RF test fixtures, evaluation hardware, and supporting circuitry.
• Statistical analysis of manufacturing data.
• Design for manufacturability and design for test.
• Cross-functional engineering and manufacturing processes.
Required Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, or a closely related technical field.
• Academic coursework or project experience involving RF engineering, microwave engineering, electromagnetics, analog electronics, communications, or electronic measurement.
• Familiarity with basic electronic laboratory equipment and measurement practices.
• Ability to interpret electrical schematics and basic engineering drawings.
• Ability to organize and analyze technical data using tools such as Excel, MATLAB, Python, or similar software.
• Clear written and verbal communication skills.
• Willingness to spend significant time working directly with hardware in the laboratory and manufacturing areas.
• Curiosity, persistence, and a genuine desire to understand how RF products work.
Preferred Qualifications
• Exposure to vector network analyzers, spectrum analyzers, signal generators, or RF power measurements.
• Experience with Python, MATLAB, LabVIEW, C#, or another programming or test-automation environment.
• Experience designing or assembling printed circuit boards, test fixtures, cables, or electronic hardware.
• Familiarity with S-parameters, impedance matching, gain, return loss, compression, noise figure, harmonics, or other RF performance concepts.
• Exposure to statistical analysis or semiconductor/electronics manufacturing.
• Internship, senior design, laboratory, amateur radio, research, or personal-project experience involving RF or microwave hardware.
The Candidate We Hope to Find
The strongest candidate will not necessarily arrive with extensive production experience. We are looking for someone who finds RF and microwave engineering genuinely interesting, enjoys learning from measured data, is willing to work carefully through difficult hardware problems, and wants to become the kind of engineer others trust to build solid solutions.
