The Role
We’re hiring a Senior Accountant to manage a portfolio of ongoing clients through the full accounting cycle. This is a remote, full-time position with real ownership but we'd prefer someone to live in MA, NH or ME — you’ll be the point person for your clients’ month-end close, financial reporting, reconciliations, payroll, and audit support.
This is not a data-entry seat. It’s a role for someone who asks questions, catches things before clients do, and can explain a balance sheet to a business owner in plain English.
What You’ll Do
- Manage full-cycle accounting and month-end close for a portfolio of nonprofit and for-profit clients, including multi-entity organizations.
- Prepare GAAP-compliant financial statements and Board reporting packages for executive leadership.
- Perform balance sheet reconciliations: bank recs, prepaids, accruals, fixed assets, restricted fund schedules, and intercompany balances.
- Track grant budgets and government contracts with proper expense matching and revenue recognition.
- Manage payroll processing and payroll tax compliance for clients.
- Coordinate audit preparation and work directly with external auditors through fieldwork.
- Support clients on budgeting, forecasting, and financial performance conversations.
- Lead accounting cleanup and onboarding projects for new clients, including GL remediation and GAAP compliance work.
- Document procedures and cross-train teammates to ensure consistency across the team.
What We’re Looking For
- 6+ years of progressive accounting experience with full-cycle close ownership.
- Experience managing multiple clients simultaneously in an outsourced, fractional, or public accounting environment.
- Strong nonprofit accounting background: grant tracking, restricted funds, audit support, and Form 990 familiarity.
- Solid GAAP knowledge — you can prepare and interpret financial statements independently.
- Hands-on multi-entity accounting experience (consolidations, intercompany, entity-level reporting).
- Payroll administration and payroll tax compliance experience.
- Excellent communication skills — you can translate numbers into clear language for non-accountant clients.
- Self-directed and organized in a remote work environment; you hit deadlines without being chased.
- Proficiency in QuickBooks (Online and/or Desktop) strongly preferred.
- Experience with Sage Intacct, Microsoft Dynamics, or similar ERP is a big plus.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required. CPA or CMA a plus, not required.
