Job Title: Per Diem Diagnostic Medical Sonographer
Job Summary:
The Per Diem Sonographer performs a full range of outpatient diagnostic ultrasound exams, including abdominal, pelvic, small parts, vascular and musculoskeletal studies, with a strong emphasis on head and neck imaging (thyroid, parathyroid, salivary glands and soft tissue). The role requires strong general ultrasound skills, flexibility with per diem scheduling (with high need on Fridays), and excellent patient care.
Key responsibilities
· Perform a variety of general ultrasound exams (abdomen, pelvis, OB/GYN within scope, small parts, soft tissue, and limited vascular), following practice protocols.
· Perform high‑quality head and neck sonography, including thyroid, parathyroid, salivary glands, and neck soft‑tissue ultrasounds.
· Operate ultrasound equipment, optimize images, and ensure adequate coverage of all relevant anatomy for accurate diagnosis.
· Verify patient identity, review clinical history, and confirm exam indications prior to scanning.
· Explain procedures, answer patient questions, and ensure comfort and safety throughout the exam.
· Recognize normal and abnormal sonographic findings and document comprehensive, technically accurate images and measurements for physician interpretation.
· Adjust scanning technique as needed to improve image quality, including repositioning patients and repeating views when appropriate.
· Prepare, clean, and maintain ultrasound equipment and exam rooms; report equipment malfunctions promptly.
· Adhere to infection control, OSHA, and universal precautions at all times.
· Accurately complete worksheets and ensure proper labeling, archiving, and transfer of images in PACS/EMR systems.
Schedule, requirements, and qualifications
· Employment type: Per diem; variable weekday hours based on practice needs.
· Schedule: Flexible per diem schedule Monday–Friday, with a strong need for regular Friday availability and occasional additional days as needed.
· Education: Graduate of an accredited Diagnostic Medical Sonography or Ultrasound Technology program.
· Certification:
o ARDMS registered (RDMS or equivalent) required or obtained within the required timeframe, with head and neck/thyroid experience strongly preferred.
· Experience:
o Minimum 1–2 years’ experience as a general sonographer, including independent performance of head and neck/thyroid ultrasound exams, preferred.
· Skills:
o Proficiency in head and neck sonographic anatomy and pathology, ability to work independently in a small outpatient practice, excellent communication and patient‑care skills, and comfort working in a fast‑paced environment.
Work setting and physical requirements
· Outpatient imaging office environment, close collaboration with radiologist and office staff.
· Requires frequent standing, walking, reaching, and positioning patients, including assisting patients with limited mobility.
· Must be able to lift and move up to 35 pounds in the course of patient positioning and equipment handling.
