Position Overview
HYPOTHEkids is seeking an experienced and engaging STEAM EDU Instructor to facilitate a pre-developed curriculum for high school students.
The instructor will lead interactive, in-person sessions focused on teaching methodology, classroom management, cognitive development, SEL, lesson planning, professional skills, and hands-on practice with HYPOTHEkids K-5 STEAM lessons.The instructor will be responsible for preparing for and delivering each session, maintaining an engaging and supportive classroom environment, tracking student progress, and preparing participants for their summer teaching internships.Paid time will include training and preparing, teaching, travel time to and from the school, and regular check-in meetings with the HYPOTHEkids K–8 Program Manager, as well as administering required student assessments and collecting documentation needed for students’ internships.

Compensation: $40-$50 per hour, depending on experience
Schedule: Approximately 15 paid hours per week

The instructor must be available during High School Career Path block:
Days: Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays*
Class time: 2:22–3:12 PM

Session length: 50 minutes
*Sessions will not be held on school holidays, breaks, professional-development days, or other days when the school is closed.

HYPOTHEkids is an education and youth-development nonprofit based in West Harlem that provides K–12 students from low-resource backgrounds with hands-on education and training opportunities in STEAM—science, technology, engineering, art and design, and mathematics—setting them on a path toward academic success and well-paying careers.
About STEAM EDU
HYPOTHEkids’ “STEAM EDU” STEAM educator training program prepares high school students to become confident, hands-on elementary STEAM educators. Through interactive training and a paid summer teaching internship, participants learn the fundamentals of education, gain classroom teaching experience, build leadership skills, and learn how to engage younger students in STEAM.The program is designed for juniors on the school’s Education Career Pathway who are interested in teaching, youth development, and STEAM careers. After completing the academic-year training, eligible students will be placed in paid summer internships teaching HYPOTHEkids lessons to K–5 students.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare for and facilitate 122 in-person sessions using the provided STEAM EDU curriculum.
- Create an inclusive, engaging, and well-managed classroom environment.
- Lead discussions, role-plays, teaching simulations, peer-feedback activities, and hands-on STEAM lessons.
- Model effective teaching and classroom-management strategies.
- Observe student teaching practice and provide supportive, specific, and actionable feedback.
- Track attendance, participation, assignments, and student progress.
- Assess students’ professionalism and readiness for summer internships.
- Communicate regularly with HYPOTHEkids and high school staff.
- Participate in required training, planning meetings, and program check-ins.
- Follow all HYPOTHEkids and the school’s policies related to student safety and professional conduct.
Required Qualifications
- BA in Education (near completion considered) or a BA in a related field
- Professional teaching experience.
- Experience working with high school students.
- Strong classroom-management and group-facilitation skills.
- Ability to facilitate an established curriculum while adapting to student needs.
- Ability to provide supportive and actionable feedback to young people.
- Strong communication, organization, and time-management skills.
- Dependability, professionalism, and consistent attendance.
- Ability to work in person at the Bronx program site.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience teaching STEAM, education, career-readiness, or youth-development content.
- Experience mentoring students preparing for internships or employment.
- Familiarity with project-based and experiential learning.
- Experience working in NYC schools or after-school programs.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate is an experienced educator who enjoys working with teenagers and helping them develop into confident young professionals. They should be energetic, patient, organized, and comfortable combining direct instruction with interactive practice.
They should also be able to balance encouragement with accountability, model strong teaching practices, and help students translate educational theory into effective classroom instruction.
Pay: $40.00 - $50.00 per hour
