Our BICO Steel location in Akron, OH is looking for a Laborer. This position is part of a union shop represented by Local Union No. 2L-19 in Ohio.
Shift: 1st Shift, 6:00 AM – 2:00 PM or 2nd Shift, 2:00 PM – 10:00 PM
Job Summary
BICO Steel is seeking a dependable Laborer to support daily shop operations through deburring, cleaning, material movement, housekeeping, and other general duties as directed by supervision. This role helps ensure parts are properly checked, cleaned, marked, documented, and moved to the next work center while maintaining a safe and organized work environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform general labor duties daily as directed by supervision
- Support deburring, cleaning, material movement, and shop housekeeping needs
- Check and clear work areas to avoid trip hazards and maintain proper housekeeping at all times
- Wear required PPE, including safety glasses and steel-toed shoes, and follow all safety procedures
- Sweep plate and magnet free of debris before handling material
- Match production orders to the correct piece or pieces
- Check Rockwell hardness on heat-treated parts and verify requirements against customer specifications listed on the production order
- Check thickness, length, width, and edge conditions to specifications; notify a supervisor of any non-conformance
- Remove slag and scale from parts and follow any special deburring instructions
- Mark parts with order/item number, next work center, customer mark number, and any special markings listed on the production order
- Document clock number, dimensions checked, date, and time on required production paperwork or travelers
- Update order status using the job tracking computer function and record order information in labor entry
- Move completed pieces and production orders to the next work center, grinding department, or shipping area as required
- Perform cleaning duties requested by supervision, including machine cleaning, general maintenance, sweeping, chip removal, and specific shop area cleaning
- Work with supervisors and team members to meet department deadlines, improve throughput, and use time efficiently
Required Qualifications
- Willingness to work in a shop or manufacturing environment
- Ability to take direction from supervisors and complete changing daily tasks as assigned
- Mechanical aptitude and ability to learn shop processes, tools, and equipment
- Ability to follow production orders, check basic dimensions, and identify non-conforming material
- Basic computer ability to update job tracking and labor entry information
- Commitment to safe work practices, housekeeping, and use of required PPE
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in a steel service center, manufacturing, warehouse, or shop environment
- Experience with deburring, grinding, cleaning, or general production support duties
- Familiarity with production orders, travelers, job tracking, or shop paperwork

Work Environment & Physical Requirements
- Shop and manufacturing environment with exposure to steel materials, machinery, noise, debris, and production activity
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, reach, sweep, clean, and move throughout the shop for extended periods
- Ability to handle parts and materials as required by daily job duties
- Use of PPE such as safety glasses, steel-toed shoes, gloves, hearing protection, and other required safety equipment
- Work is coordinated through the applicable supervisor and communicated through verbal daily line-up meetings
