Prepare assigned areas for daily visitors as well as special events, ensuring that the areas are well maintained, plants and collections are healthy, and the areas are safe and attractive for the public.
Perform and support horticultural practices that encourage overall plant health and soil nutrition, including sustainable gardening and integrated pest management practices.
Assist with educational programming and special events, as needed.
Maintain horticultural tools and equipment.
Maintain records of work, garden maintenance, and plant health as required
Collaborate with the Horticultural team on any and all tasks required for maintaining the highest standards of landscape management and horticultural operations.
Assist with the maintenance of all container and flower beds/plantings at the Visitor Center, Lewis Hall, Claude Moore Hall, Bassett House, Asian Garden at Bassett, and the Annie duPont Formal Garden.
Other duties as assigned.
Associates or bachelor degree in horticulture, botany, natural science, or related field of study is preferred
Minimum of 1-2 years of hands-on experience in a public garden or conservatory, with in-depth knowledge of plant culture, maintenance, and identification
Ability to represent Montpelier to colleagues, guests, and community in a respectful and positive manner
Must possess a valid Virginia State Driver?s License and have an acceptable motor vehicle record
Ability: to stand; to use hands to finger to handle or feel and reach; to walk; to sit and stoop; to kneel, crouch or crawl on frequent basis; to climb or balance at different levels of elevation; to talk, hear, taste, smell; to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds frequently and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds
Ability to work weekends, holidays, and evenings as needed.
