Colorado Senator Michael Bennet seeks a Communications Director to lead an active communications team, serve as chief spokesperson, and manage overall strategic direction for the Senator’s public engagement and communications. The role requires exceptional oral and written communication skills, a strong understanding of political communications, and the ability to work collaboratively.
The Communications Director
- Serves as a member of the senior staff, working closely with the Senator, Chief of Staff, and legislative and state staff while leading and managing a communications team located in Washington DC and in Colorado.
- As the Senator's chief communications adviser, develops and oversees the Senator’s overall communications strategy, media engagement, messaging and public positioning to advance legislative, committee, and state priorities.
- Sets communications priorities for the office and develops integrated communications plans to advance work nationally and in Colorado.
- Builds relationships and works closely with state and national media.
- Builds and maintains relationships with content creators, including podcasters, newsletter authors, and other emerging media voices.
- Advises the Senator on content creation and develops compelling content across traditional and digital platforms.
- Writes, edits, or approves all press releases, speeches, op-eds, talking points, and oversees digital media and assists in planning public events.
The ideal candidate has:
- Experience in a senior communications leadership role, with demonstrated success advising principals, managing teams, and developing strategic communications in a fast-paced, high-profile environment.
- A minimum of 6 years of experience in communications or public relations.
- Experience developing integrated, audience-centered communications strategies that combine traditional media relations with digital-first storytelling – including vertical video, original content, and creator partnerships to expand reach and engagement.
- Ability to bring, build and maintain relationships across media ecosystems including local, state, national and political outlets, and to bring extensive on-the-record experience.
- Demonstrated experience developing long-term communications strategy and advising senior principals.
- Strong writing skills, is detail-oriented, and can maintain a sense of humor and positive attitude in a fast-paced environment.
- Exercises sound judgment, particularly in high-pressure or politically sensitive situations.
- Ties to Colorado and Spanish language skills are preferred but not required.
