TRAFFIC SUPERVISORS/SCHOOL CROSSING GUARDS
Summary
Traffic Supervisors (School Crossing Guards) are responsible for controlling and directing motor vehicle and pedestrian traffic at assigned crossings in such a way as to protect the safety of the school children while also providing for the orderly movement of traffic.
Traffic Supervisors work a minimum of 2 hours/day and a maximum of 4 hours/day depending on school location. They work hours that depend on site and may need to go back to school site in morning, noon, and at school dismissal time.
Supervision:
Works under the general supervision of Police Chief or his designee.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Reports to assigned crossing station in a timely manner and remains at station until conclusion of school site in morning and/or dismissal time.
Responsible for ensuring that children use proper crossing locations. Responsible for ensuring there are no children in streets while traffic is moving.
Must be alert for present or potential traffic hazards in the area surrounding the assigned crossings. Submits to Safety Officer a written report of any hazards along with recommendation for remedial steps to be taken.
Must be continuously aware of surroundings and maintain ability to remove themselves and children from harms way.
Education and Experience:
High School diploma or GED preferred.
Physical Skills:
Must be able to stand and walk from curbing to middle of street. Use of arm and hand required to control/direct traffic.
Motor Skills:
Must be able to stop cars by use of arms and/or use of a sign. Must be able to have use of verbal communications skills, including proficient use of English language, necessary to instruct children when safe to cross street, stop, etc.
Visual Skills:
Must be signed in order to detect any traffic, hazards, children etc. Must be able to listen or view media for weather reports and/or announcements on school cancellations, delayed openings or early dismissals and then act accordingly.

Position does not require any pushing or pulling. Position is moderately mobile in nature requiring use of legs. As needed, use of arm and hand required to control/direct traffic. May include lifting/turning of a sign, approximately two pounds in weight.
