Job Title: Liturgy Assistant
Reports To: Liturgy Director
Hours: Part-time, Non-Exempt
JOB SUMMARY:
The Assistant Liturgist supports the planning, coordination, and execution of liturgical
celebrations to foster a prayerful, reverent, and engaging worship experience for the parish
community. This role collaborates closely with clergy, staff, and volunteers to ensure that all
liturgies reflect the traditions and norms of the Roman Catholic Church.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Because all San Francisco Solano Church employees represent the Roman
Catholic Church, they are expected to conduct themselves according to the goals and mission of
the Church in performing their work.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES:
1. Clergy and Minister Scheduling + Stipends
- Schedule and manage liturgical ministers through Ministry Scheduler Pro (MSP)
- Schedule priests for Masses and Confessions
- Schedule and manage Altar Linen Ministers via email
- Notify ministry leads of newly registered ministers
- Coordinate minister training schedules with Ministry Leads
- Submit monthly priest stipends for Masses and Confessions to Payroll
2. Liturgical Preparation
- Set up for weekend Masses
- Coordinate Penance Services
- Coordinate and communicate with priests
- Create priest seat nametags
- Create church maps for priests and ministers
- Set up church
- Manage reserved seating for Christmas and Easter
- Communicate with ministers on the number and placement of seats
- Create reserved seating signs
- Place reserved seating signs for Masses
- Prepare retreat Mass kits
- Pre-treat and maintain altar linens
- Stock liturgical materials (e.g., wine, hosts, books)
- Coordinate with Ushers and track Mass attendance counts (October, Christmas, Easter)
3. Liturgical Document Creation
- Create weekend Mass materials (scripts, announcements, blessings, signage, etc.)
- Develop training materials and procedural documents (e.g., sacristan training, minister
checklists)
- Create EMHC station sign-ups and certificates
- Design liturgical handouts (e.g., Blessing of Homes)
- Create and place personalized candle labels for All Souls Day
4. Liturgical Communications
- Communicate weekly and special updates to ministers and clergy (e.g., procedural
changes, special collections, liturgical notes)
- Take notes during clergy and liturgy meetings
GENERAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Practicing Roman Catholic in good standing with a strong understanding of Catholic
liturgy.
- Knowledge of liturgical documents (e.g., General Instruction of the Roman Missal).
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
- Microsoft Office proficient preferred.
- Ability to work collaboratively with clergy, staff, and volunteers.
- Ability to work evenings, weekends, and major liturgical seasons.
- Previous parish or liturgical ministry experience preferred.
- May require light lifting of liturgical items (books, candles, etc.).
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods of time, including during Masses,
liturgical celebrations, meetings, and parish events.
- Ability to frequently walk throughout the church, parish offices, sacristy, and other
areas of the parish campus.
- Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, squat, reach, and occasionally climb stairs as needed
to prepare for and support liturgical celebrations.
- Ability to lift, carry, and move items weighing up to 25 pounds, including liturgical
supplies, books, materials, and event-related items.
- Ability to assist with the setup, movement, and storage of liturgical materials,
signage, chairs, tables, and other equipment as needed.
- Sufficient manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination to handle liturgical books,
vessels, supplies, office equipment, and computer equipment.
- Ability to communicate effectively in person and by telephone, requiring sufficient
hearing and speech.
- Sufficient visual acuity for reading printed materials, working on a computer,
preparing liturgical documents, and performing tasks requiring attention to detail.
- Ability to work in a variety of parish environments, including offices, the church,
sacristy, outdoor areas, and other parish facilities.

ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENT:
- Work is performed in a church, sacristy, parish office, and other indoor parish facilities, as
well as remote/hybrid.
- Regular exposure to varying levels of noise, including music, amplified sound,
congregational activity, and parish events.
- May occasionally work outdoors and be exposed to varying weather conditions,
including heat, cold, wind, and rain, particularly during outdoor liturgical celebrations or
parish events.
- May work in environments with large gatherings of people and varying levels of activity.
- Ability to work occasional evenings, weekends, holidays, and other non-standard hours
based on the parish liturgical calendar and ministry needs.
- May occasionally work in areas where there is exposure to dust, cleaning products,
candles, incense, and other materials commonly found in church and parish
environments.
- Work may involve occasional interruptions and the need to respond calmly and
effectively to changing needs during liturgical celebrations and parish events.
