About Us:
White and White Contracting, LLC (W&W) is a heavy civil underground utility contractor based in the East Valley of the greater Phoenix Metro area. We self-perform a broad scope of underground utility work, including wet and dry utilities, sewer and water systems, storm drain, fireline, site electrical, pipeline replacement, CIPP lining, jack and bore, and bypass pumping.
We run multiple crews across active jobsites throughout the Phoenix metro area at the same time, every day — which means our equipment fleet cannot afford to sit idle. A single machine down on any given site can stall a crew, push back schedules, and put production deadlines at risk. Keeping our excavators, loaders, backhoes, and support equipment running reliably isn't a back-office task — it's mission-critical to our ability to deliver on every active jobsite simultaneously. We need a mechanic who understands that urgency and treats fleet uptime as the top priority it is.
POSITION OVERVIEW
We are looking for an experienced Lead Heavy Diesel Equipment Mechanic to take ownership of our equipment fleet — combining hands-on diagnostic and repair expertise with fleet management responsibility across multiple active jobsites (Buckeye, Peoria, Phoenix, Chandler, Queen Creek, Maricopa).
This is a hybrid role: part senior technician, part fleet manager. You'll keep roughly 75 units — excavators, loaders, backhoes, water trucks/towers, rollers, trucks/trailers, and support equipment — running reliably, while building the systems, vendor relationships, and reporting that turn maintenance from reactive to predictive. You'll work directly with our Operations Manager, General Superintendents, and Foremen, and communicate effectively with our bilingual (English/Spanish) crew.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
● Fleet Familiarization: Learn the full fleet mix, review maintenance records and PM schedules, and identify chronic “problem child” machines
● Baseline Assessment: Perform baseline inspections fleet-wide and audit current PM compliance
● Telematics & Readiness: Review Visionlink for idle time and fault codes; verify tooling, service truck stock, and parts availability
● PM Discipline: Bring PM compliance to 90%+ and build or refine PM checklists
● Inspection Routine: Establish a daily/weekly inspection routine with the Operations Manager and Foremen
● Root-Cause Repairs: Address top recurring failures with root-cause fixes rather than temporary patches
● Component Tracking: Track undercarriages, hydraulic pumps, and final drives; establish an oil sampling schedule
● Strategic Scheduling: Partner with operations to schedule downtime strategically around production needs
● Fleet Strategy: Make rebuild-vs-replace recommendations and advise on equipment rotation strategy
Ongoing Fleet Management
● Vendor Coordination: Coordinate and negotiate with vendors (e.g., Empire Cat, independent shops) for repairs, parts, and field service
● Fleet Records: Manage the equipment condition rating system and keep fleet records current
● Repair Prioritization: Prioritize and dispatch repairs across multiple concurrent jobsites
● Crew Communication: Maintain clear, bilingual communication with crew and foremen on equipment status and scheduling
● Budget Ownership: Own the parts/vendor budget and identify cost-saving opportunities without sacrificing reliability
QUALIFICATIONS
● 5+ years of experience as a heavy diesel / heavy equipment mechanic, ideally with CAT and other major OEM platforms (excavators, loaders, backhoes)
● Prior experience managing a fleet, ideally in heavy civil or underground utility construction
● Strong diagnostic skills across hydraulic, electrical, and powertrain systems, including final drive and undercarriage repair
● Comfort with fleet management tools — telematics platforms (e.g., Visionlink), maintenance tracking spreadsheets/software, and vendor coordination
● Own tools required
● Valid driver's license; CDL a plus
● Bilingual (English/Spanish) strongly preferred
● Willingness to travel between jobsites across the greater Phoenix metro area
