Reporting to the UVA Health Chief Financial Officer, the UVA Health Controller leads the accounting operations of both the University of Virginia Medical Center, a 670+ bed academic teaching hospital with a Level 1 trauma center, Level IV NICU and an NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center and UVA Community Health, a 501(c)3 with collectively 260 patient beds across Prince William Medical Center, Culpeper Medical Center, Haymarket Medical Center and 40 outpatient clinic locations. Together, these entities generate over $4.0 billion in net patient revenue annually.
The Role
The UVA Health Controller is accountable for the accuracy of the Medical Center & Community Health financials, including maintenance of its accounting records, production and distribution of financial reports, development and maintenance of controls and budgets, and ensuring compliance with generally accepted accounting principles and state reporting requirements while cultivating a culture of integrity and operational efficiency.
In addition, the Controller is responsible for the consolidated financial reporting of the entire Health System, which includes UVA Medical Center, UVA Community Health, the UVA Physicians Group, the UVA Medical School, the UVA Nursing School, and the Health Sciences Library, collectively more than a $5.3 billion enterprise.
This role demands a proactive, innovative leader with deep expertise in finance and the ability to effectively lead a team while addressing the multiple institutional priorities.
Financial Operations
Maintain a cohesive system of accounting policies and procedures.
Manage the operations of the Health System’s accounting departments to ensure a structure that supports Health System goals as well as the objectives the department
Oversee the accounting operations of the Health System’s subsidiary entities, specifically focusing on their accounting controls, transaction processing, and underlying operating rules.
In partnership with executive leadership, develop and implement benchmarks and operational metrics to measure the financial performance of Health System operations, including variance analysis, identification of performance drivers and executive summaries for the Board.
Provide financial analyses, modeling and support as needed to support budget preparation, capital investments, pricing decisions, contract negotiations and other organizational needs.
Serve as a financial lead and advocate for the thoughtful design and implementation of Workday across the UVA Health enterprise, in partnership with the VP for Financial Operations Planning and Analysis and the University Controller’s Office.
Financial Reporting & Strategy
Oversee the preparation of timely, accurate UVA Health financial statements in compliance with GAAP and GASB standards. This includes monthly reporting and the preparation of financial statements and footnotes for the University’s annual report.
Lead the financial close process for both UVA Health and the larger Health System with efficiency, transparency, and accountability.
Partner with UVA Health leadership to develop strategies that support long-term fiscal health and growth.
Ensure the appropriate structure is in place so that all journal entries are appropriately reviewed and approved.
Compliance
Ensure strong internal controls are in place and lead a culture of compliance across the finance team.
Manage the relationships with and coordinate the provision of information to the Health System’s internal and external auditors.
Monitor debt levels and ensure compliance with debt covenants.
Ensure that the Health System complies with local, state, and federal government reporting requirements.
Management
Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing accounting team.
Serve as a trusted advisor to both medical center and academic administrative leaders, providing data-driven insight.
Build collaborative relationships across UVA Health, UVA, and external stakeholders to advance financial stewardship.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education: Bachelor’s degree in finance, or related field required. Master’s degree in business, finance, accounting, or related field preferred.
Experience: 10 years of senior management experience with increasing responsibility in financial management in a large, complex organization(s), preferably a health system.
Licensure: CPA required.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
The pay range for this role is $186,301.00 - $372,602.00 annually. Individual compensation will be determined by the selected candidate's qualifications, previous work experience, and/or education.
