Energy Marshal - Data Center
EarthStream Global is seeking an experienced Energy Marshal to support the delivery of large-scale Data Center construction projects. This position plays a critical role in ensuring electrical safety, energy isolation compliance, and safe work execution across mission-critical environments.
The successful candidate will serve as the site authority for electrical safety practices, Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures, permit management, and energy control programs. Working closely with project teams, contractors, commissioning personnel, and client representatives, the Energy Marshal will help ensure all energized systems and electrical activities are managed in accordance with site safety requirements, industry standards, and operational procedures.
Data Center experience is highly preferred; however, candidates with strong backgrounds in electrical safety and isolation management within power generation, pharmaceutical, semiconductor, manufacturing, petrochemical, industrial processing, or other highly regulated environments will also be considered.
Position Summary
The Energy Marshal is responsible for overseeing and enforcing electrical safety processes associated with construction, commissioning, startup, and operational activities on site. This role focuses heavily on energy isolation planning, permit-to-work systems, Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) implementation, switching procedures, and ensuring compliance with site-specific electrical safety standards.
The successful candidate will act as a key interface between contractors, commissioning teams, facility operators, and project stakeholders to ensure all energized works and system isolations are planned, documented, communicated, and executed safely.
This position requires a strong understanding of mission-critical environments where safety, reliability, and procedural compliance are essential.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as the site subject matter expert for electrical safety, energy isolation, and LOTO procedures.
- Administer and oversee the project's Energy Isolation Program.
- Review, approve, and coordinate Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) activities for construction and commissioning works.
- Verify all isolation plans, switching procedures, and energy control documentation prior to execution.
- Support the planning and implementation of electrical system energization activities.
- Manage and oversee Permit-to-Work (PTW) processes associated with electrical works.
- Conduct audits and inspections to ensure compliance with electrical safety requirements and site procedures.
- Facilitate pre-task planning meetings, isolation reviews, and contractor safety briefings.
- Coordinate with commissioning teams, electrical contractors, facility operators, and client representatives to manage system access and energy control activities.
- Verify that all personnel performing electrical work are appropriately trained, authorized, and compliant with site requirements.
- Monitor energized work activities and ensure risks are appropriately assessed and mitigated.
- Review risk assessments, method statements, switching schedules, and isolation permits.
- Maintain comprehensive records of permits, isolations, switching activities, and LOTO documentation.
- Investigate electrical safety incidents, near misses, and procedural deviations and support corrective action implementation.
- Support startup, commissioning, and integrated systems testing activities from an electrical safety perspective.
- Ensure compliance with client standards, site procedures, and applicable electrical safety regulations.
- Promote a proactive safety culture focused on hazard identification, risk management, and procedural compliance.
- Stop work when unsafe conditions, unauthorized energization activities, or procedural violations are observed.
Qualifications:
- Minimum 5 years of experience in an Energy Marshal, Electrical Safety Manager, Authorized Person, Senior Commissioning Safety, Operations, or similar role.
- Extensive experience managing Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) programs and electrical isolations.
- Strong knowledge of Permit-to-Work (PTW) systems and energy control procedures.
- Experience working within Data Centers, mission-critical facilities, power generation, industrial plants, pharmaceutical facilities, semiconductor plants, or other highly regulated environments.
- Strong understanding of electrical distribution systems, switchgear, transformers, UPS systems, generators, and critical power infrastructure.
- Experience coordinating energization, commissioning, and startup activities.
- Ability to review switching procedures, RAMS, isolation plans, and commissioning documentation.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Strong audit, compliance, and documentation skills.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced construction and commissioning environment.
Preferred
- Direct experience working on hyperscale or colocation Data Center projects.
- Experience supporting mission-critical commissioning and electrical turnover activities.
- Electrical qualification, apprenticeship, engineering degree, or equivalent technical background.
- NFPA 70E, OSHA, High Voltage Authorized Person, or equivalent electrical safety training.
- Experience with client-specific energy isolation and control programs.
- Knowledge of commissioning, integrated systems testing (IST), and critical facility operations.
Key Requirement
Candidates must have a strong background in electrical safety, energy isolation management, Permit-to-Work systems, and Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures. Data Center experience is highly desirable; however, individuals with significant experience managing electrical safety and isolation processes on complex, process-driven industrial projects will be strongly considered.
