Fiber Optic Utility Locator
Job Summary
We are looking for a reliable, detail-oriented Fiber Optic Utility Locator to join our team. In this role, you will be responsible for locating and marking underground fiber optic and telecommunications facilities before excavation activities to help prevent damage and ensure the safety of crews and the public. The ideal candidate is self-motivated, safety-conscious, and comfortable working independently in the field.
Responsibilities
- Locate and accurately mark underground fiber optic and telecommunications facilities using industry-standard locating equipment.
- Read and interpret utility maps, construction plans, GIS data, and as-built drawings.
- Respond to locate requests within required deadlines while maintaining a high level of accuracy.
- Document completed locates using mobile applications and company reporting systems.
- Verify and update utility records when discrepancies are identified.
- Communicate professionally with contractors, homeowners, utility companies, and internal personnel.
- Follow all OSHA, state, and company safety policies and procedures.
- Inspect and maintain locating equipment, tools, and assigned company vehicle.
- Report damaged facilities, unsafe conditions, or mapping issues promptly.
- Maintain a professional appearance and represent the company positively in the field.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Previous experience locating fiber optic or telecommunications utilities preferred; training available for qualified candidates.
- Experience using electromagnetic locating equipment and related utility locating technology preferred.
- Ability to read maps, construction drawings, and utility records.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
- Excellent communication and customer service skills.
- Ability to work independently and manage daily assignments.
- Basic computer, tablet, and smartphone proficiency.
- Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions and on uneven terrain.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and perform frequent walking, bending, kneeling, and standing.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with fiber optic network infrastructure and telecommunications systems.
- Knowledge of underground utility locating practices and damage prevention.
- Experience with GPS/GIS mapping software.
- OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification.
- Knowledge of state One Call/811 procedures.

Work Environment
This position is primarily field-based and requires working outdoors year-round in varying weather conditions. Candidates should be comfortable traveling throughout the service area, working independently, and maintaining a strong focus on safety, accuracy, and productivity.
Pay: From $20.00 per hour
