Position Overview:
The Structural Steel Fabricator is responsible for producing high-quality steel components from raw material through final preparation. This role involves operating CNC and manual fabrication equipment, performing precise layout and fitting, executing proper tacking practices, overseeing coating preparation, and assisting with material handling and loading to support efficient project delivery.
Key Responsibilities:
- Plasma Table Operation
- Set up, program, and operate CNC plasma cutting tables.
- Read and interpret shop drawings, cut lists, and part labels.
- Verify material thickness, grade, and heat numbers before cutting.
- Perform routine maintenance, consumable changes, and quality checks on cut parts.
- Fabrication, Fitting & Tacking
- Perform detailed layout work on beams, columns, tube steel, angle frames, embeds, lintels, and miscellaneous steel.
- Interpret structural drawings, erection drawings, and WPS requirements to ensure correct placement of holes, weld preps, stiffeners, clip angles, base plates, and connection materials.
- Confirm member orientation using centerlines, elevation marks, camber specs, and reference dimensions.
- Fit structural assemblies using squares, levels, plumb bobs, lasers, tape measures, and layout tools to maintain tight tolerances.
- Tack weld components with proper weld penetration, spacing, heat control, and distortion management.
- Prep weld joints by beveling, grinding, cleaning, and ensuring proper root openings according to WPS.
- Safely operate overhead cranes, hoists, jibs, chain falls, and rigging to position heavy members for assembly.
- Identify and correct fabrication issues such as twists, misalignment, warping, or out-of-tolerance parts.
- Collaborate with welders to ensure assemblies are fully welded to spec and remain within allowable tolerances for field erection.
- Conduct in-process checks to verify hole alignment, bolt fit, edge prep, member straightness, and connection accuracy before moving pieces to welding, coatings, or staging.
- Coating & Surface Preparation Management
- Coordinate with coating personnel on blasting, grinding, galvanizing, and paint requirements.
- Ensure proper part cleaning, labeling, and preparation before coating.
- Verify coating thickness and finish quality per project specs.
- Maintain safety and environmental compliance in coating areas.
- Material Handling & Loading
- Safely load/unload trucks using forklifts, cranes, and rigging equipment.
- Bundle, tag, and stage material correctly for delivery.
- Verify load accuracy, weight distribution, and DOT compliance.
- Maintain organization of yard and staging areas.
- Quality & Safety
- Follow all OSHA, shop, and company safety standards.
- Complete daily equipment inspections.
- Maintain heat tracking and part traceability.
- Support continuous improvement in workflow, safety, and efficiency.
Qualifications:
- 3 - 10+ years of structural steel fabrication experience preferred.
- Proficient in reading drawings and welding symbols.
- Skilled with tape measures, layout tools, grinders, torches, and cutting tools.
- Experience with forklifts, cranes, and rigging.
- Strong attention to detail and teamwork.
Physical Requirements:
- Lift 50–75 lbs regularly.
- Stand, bend, and work in shop conditions for extended periods.
- Comfort with noise, heavy equipment, and heat.
Work Environment:
Fabrication shop, coating yard, staging/loading areas, and outdoor environments depending on workflow.
