Position Title: Hearing Impaired Specialist
Reports to: Teacher of Students with Hearing Impairment; Principal; Director of Special Education
FLSA: Non-exempt
Summary of the position: The fundamental role of an interpreter, regardless of specialty or place of employment, is to facilitate communication between persons who are deaf and hard of hearing and others. Educational interpreters facilitate communication between deaf students and others, including teachers, service providers, and peers within the educational environment. Many educational environments have a communication policy which should be clearly defined to the interpreter applicant. The educational team may be composed of school personnel and parents and may be more structured in some school districts than others. The educational interpreter is a member of the educational team and should be afforded every opportunity to attend meetings where educational guidelines are discussed concerning students who are provided services by that interpreter.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent, and

Completion of PGPEI activities as required by Indiana Department of Education Renewal Requirements.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Competence in the communication modality used by the student who is deaf or hard of hearing.

Competence in English grammar, including syntax, spelling and punctuation.

Working knowledge of typical language development.

Strong interpersonal skills in relating to students and adults.

Working knowledge of subjects being interpreted.

Understanding of deafness and its impact on language development.

Skill in expressive transliterating/interpreting at a rate commensurate with conversational speech and class lectures.

Adequate reverse interpreting/transliterating skill while maintaining the integrity of the message.

Ability and willingness to work as part of an Individualized Education Program team.

Ability to facilitate communication between the student and his peers and the student and adults in the school environment.

Ability to study the content of the lessons prior to class to ensure accurate representation of the lesson.

Tutors students who are deaf or hard of hearing under the direction of the teacher.

Provides feedback to teachers upon request.

Serves as a liaison to promote positive and cooperative relationships within the school environment.

Other duties as assigned.
Special Considerations/Physical Demands: The physical environment is indoors in an office or classroom setting with long periods of sitting. Physical demands may include, but are not limited to: the ability to see and hear, the ability to communicate verbally, and the ability to accurately complete complex fine-motor movements. Special considerations include, but are not limited to, the ability to communicate effectively in both speech and American Sign Language (ASL).
