Overview
We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Senior Metrology Specialist to lead our measurement and quality assurance initiatives within our manufacturing and engineering teams. This pivotal role involves ensuring the precision and accuracy of dimensional measurements, overseeing calibration processes, and maintaining compliance with industry standards such as ISO 9001, AS9100, and ISO 13485. The ideal candidate will possess extensive experience with precision measuring instruments, coordinate measuring machines (CMM), and technical drawing interpretation, driving continuous improvement in quality control processes. Key Responsibilities
1. BIW & Battery Pack Dimensional Control
- Lead dimensional surveys for BIW framing, closures, and underbody systems, as well as battery trays, enclosures, cooling plates, and HV busbar interfaces.
- Execute Cube/Ring audits, Red‑Panel builds, and Tooling 101/drill‑panel events to separate stamping, fixture, and process variation.
- Correlate data between CMM, blue‑light scanners (ATOS/ScanBox), and inline vision systems to defend Cp/Cpk performance on critical characteristics.
2. Automated Weld Shop Dimensional Control
- Act as the senior dimensional lead inside fully automated robotic weld shops, managing measurement activities across tandem lines, framing stations, hem cells, and laser‑brazing operations.
- Validate weld fixture locators, clamp sequences, and part restraint systems to eliminate springback, distortion, and heat‑induced drift during high‑current robotic welding.
- Execute Tooling 101 / Drill‑Panel studies to separate stamping variation from fixture wear and welding shrinkage; recommend shim strategies and locator re‑machining.
- Monitor and mitigate thermal effects from weld robots, servo clamps, and glue/dispense systems that impact long‑term datum stability.
3. Automotive Fixturing & Gauge Systems
- Own the lifecycle of check fixtures, welding fixtures, and master gauges: providing design input, performing Final Acceptance Inspections (FAI), and validating locator repeatability, stiffness, and thermal stability.
- Ensure all fixturing meets OEM standards for accessibility, part constraint, and measurement uncertainty.
4. Measurement Data Governance & Risk Management
- Serve as the final authority on measurement data validity. When datasets exhibit high residuals, insufficient redundancy, environmental non‑conformance, or geometric degeneracy, you will formally invalidate the data, block downstream engineering decisions, and initiate a structured re‑measurement and root‑cause cycle.
- Translate complex metrology findings into clear, risk‑based recommendations for OEM stakeholders and internal leadership.
5. Standards & Technical Leadership
- Mentor technicians and engineers on advanced measurement techniques, environmental compensation, and safe operation in active robotic cells.
- Drive continuous improvement in measurement speed, reliability, and integration with MES/Factory Data systems.
Required Qualifications
Hardware Expertise (Mandatory)
- Expert-level proficiency with FARO Arms (Romer), FARO Laser Trackers (Vantage), and Leica Laser Trackers (AT40x/AT960).
- Hands‑on experience with CMMs (Zeiss/Hexagon), blue‑light/structured‑light scanners, and gap‑flush gauging systems.
Software Proficiency
- Advanced capability in SpatialAnalyzer for large‑scale network adjustments, best‑fit analysis, and reporting.
- Working knowledge of PolyWorks, Calypso/PC‑DMIS, GOM Inspect, and CATIA V5/V6.
Domain Knowledge
- Deep understanding of automated weld shop processes, BIW construction, and high‑voltage battery pack assembly.
- Strong command of multi‑station tracker coordination, including constrained adjustments, datum management, and redundancy analysis.
- Thorough knowledge of automotive dimensional quality systems (GD&T, PFMEA, APQP/PPAP, dimensional gates).
Professional Attributes
- 5+ years of advanced manufacturing metrology experience in automotive or EV sectors.
- Proven ability to operate independently in fast‑paced, 24/7 production environments.
- Exceptional communication skills—able to present complex dimensional risks to OEM executives and floor supervisors alike.
