Position Summary
WD Electronics is seeking a highly capable Manufacturing Technical Writer & Engineering Technician to create best-in-class technical documentation for both customers and production employees.
This is not a conventional entry-level design-engineering position. It is a hands-on hybrid role within engineering that combines technical writing, manufacturing documentation, product installation, photography, instructional video, electrical troubleshooting, cable assembly work, and production support.
The person in this role must personally install, assemble, test, photograph, film, troubleshoot, and verify the products and processes they document. They will work directly on side-by-side vehicles, wiring harnesses, cable assemblies, production machinery, tools, and electromechanical products.
A major initial objective will be creating, validating, and releasing standardized assembly instructions for approximately 300 existing subassemblies. The employee will personally observe or perform builds, confirm instructions against current Bills of Materials and approved processes, capture supporting photographs, and coordinate reviews with Engineering, Production, and Quality Assurance.
A technical degree is helpful but not required. Practical technical ability, exceptional writing skills, hands-on aptitude, and experience documenting physical products are more important than formal engineering credentials.
Key Responsibilities:
Approximately 50–60% of the role will focus on:
- Consumer Installation Manuals: Creating best-in-class instruction manuals for the installation of WD Electronics products.
- Manufacturing Work/Assembly Instructions: Creating standardized assembly instructions for all subassemblies.
- Technical Photography: Capture installation photos of products for use in consumer and internal content.
- Instructional Videos: Plan, film, and help produce consumer installation videos and internal training videos. Perform installations and manufacturing processes on camera.
- Document Validation and Revision Control: Maintain revision history and update instructions when products or processes change.
The remaining time will support:
- Product installation and testing
- Employee training on equipment and tooling
- Cable assemblies and wiring harnesses design
- Salesforce product and Bill of Materials maintenance
- Technical troubleshooting and support
These priorities may shift as the manufacturing-documentation backlog is completed.
Required Qualifications
- Demonstrated experience creating technical documentation for physical products, manufacturing processes, equipment, vehicles, or electromechanical assemblies.
- Strong technical writing, editing, proofreading, and document-organization skills.
- Ability to turn complex technical processes into clear, sequential instructions.
- Ability to manage multiple documentation projects and revisions.
- Experience using generative AI tools for technical writing, research, image generation, data analysis, workflow automation, or content development.
- Ability to identify high-value AI use cases and convert them into practical, repeatable workflows.
- Understanding of AI limitations, including hallucinations, confidentiality risks, source verification, and the need for human review.
- Fluency in English; additional language skills are advantageous but not required.
- Hands-on mechanical aptitude. Comfortable using tools and working directly on vehicles, machinery, and physical products.
- Ability to communicate effectively with production employees, engineers, technicians, and nontechnical users.
- Ability to accept feedback and revise work quickly.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Basic understanding of 12-volt DC electrical systems.
- Experience creating manufacturing work instructions, visual assembly instructions, SOPs, travelers, service manuals, or installation guides.
- Experience documenting automotive, powersports, RV, marine, trailer, agricultural, construction, aerospace, robotics, industrial, or electromechanical products.
- Experience with revision-controlled or regulated documentation.
- Experience using an ERP, MES, Salesforce, or other product-data system.
- Experience with video scripts, filming, narration, lighting, audio, or technical video production.
- Experience training production employees or equipment operators.
- Experience using CAD software, engineering drawings, or 3D-printing equipment.
- Associate or bachelor’s degree in engineering technology, technical communication, manufacturing, automotive technology, electronics, or a related field.
- Relevant experience and a strong portfolio may be considered in place of a degree.
Initial Success Objectives
During the first year, success will include:
- Producing clear, accurate consumer installation manuals and instructional videos.
- Establishing a repeatable template and approval process for manufacturing work instructions.
- Creating, validating, and releasing a substantial portion of the approximately 300-subassembly documentation backlog.
- Developing working expertise in WD’s cable assemblies, products, vehicles, and production processes.
- Creating reliable equipment operating and training documentation.
- Training production employees on newly documented processes.
- Improving alignment between Bills of Materials, actual production methods, and released instructions.
- Reducing process variation, undocumented tribal knowledge, and reliance on verbal-only training.
Physical and Work Requirements
- Ability to move between an office, engineering area, production floor, warehouse, filming space, and vehicle-installation area.
- Ability to stand, bend, kneel, reach, and work around vehicles and machinery.
- Ability to safely use hand tools, power tools, test equipment, and production machinery after training.
- Ability to lift and carry tools, components, vehicle panels, and product assemblies consistent with normal engineering and production-support activities.
- Ability to comply with safety procedures and personal protective equipment requirements.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, hands-on environment with changing priorities.

Pay: $50,000.00 - $65,000.00 per year
