Lanterns Global is looking for an Assistant Teacher for our outdoor, marine biology program called Tides.
Tides is a three-hour drop-off experience for children grades 1st-8th. Nature journals in-hand, students learn about marine creatures, marine plants, birds, tide pools, ecosystems, and sustainability, all in a hands-on, exploratory learning environment. These are small group classes of up to 15 students per group.
Duties
You will be responsible for assisting and supporting the head teacher.
This includes, but is not limited to:
- Working with the head teacher to make sure students are signed in by a parent.
- Assisting the head teacher with carrying out the day’s lesson plan which is pre-created and given to you in advance (welcome, directing an activity/ game, book, lesson, guided beach exploration, executing snack and playtime, facilitating art).
- Continually checking for understanding.
- Being creative on-the-spot to make the most of learning moments for students to learn, understand, have fun, and appreciate the ocean, animals, plants, and one another.
- Using passion and joy to facilitate exploration and curiosity.
- Using assertive and kind communication and discipline to manage the class smoothly and effectively.
- Ensuring that each student is signed out by an adult on their pick-up form.

Our Ideal Beach-Loving Candidate:
- You have a degree in Biology - perhaps with an emphasis in Marine Biology or Environmental Sciences (or you are working towards your degree).
- You love being at the beach in all types of weather (heat/sun/rain), and handle weather with positivity and a fun attitude!
- You have experience teaching and managing groups of up to 12 students per group.
- Your passion for teaching is undeniable - your enthusiasm is contagious - you inspire your students to want to learn!
- You are a highly organized professional who knows how to manage your time, your TA, and your students with confidence.
- You are kind, assertive, have unlimited patience, and you know how to connect with and provide support to your students.
- You are a creative problem solver and can effectively address behavioral issues with confidence and kindness.
- You are physically and mentally capable of responding quickly in the event of an emergency.
- You demonstrate enthusiasm, professionalism, energy, fun, kindness,
- You are a great team player who can work well with others.
- You have a history of being reliable and punctual - with 3+ professional references that will sing your praises.
- You understand the importance of, and are committed to, clear and timely communication with management and parents.
- You are able to store, carry, and transport Tides teaching materials and class supplies, as need be.
- You are excited to be able to walk distances on the beach, exploring with your students!
Class Times
Wednesdays from 9:30 am - 12:30 pm.
Teachers are required to be onsite 30 minutes prior for set-up; and your shift will end approx. 15 minutes after class (once all students are picked up).
We are looking for someone who is available to start the week of August 24.
