Maine has very high rates of overall food insecurity and the highest rate of childhood food insecurity in New England affecting 1 in 8 people and 1 in 5 children unsure of where their next meal will come from. Maine’s committed to end hunger by 2030 with a roadmap to guide that work. Simultaneously, the cancellation of the Current Population Survey Food Security Supplement (CPS-FSS) has disrupted the primary national system used to measure food insecurity. Additionally, cuts to food assistance programs could impact food insecurity in rapid and/or unpredictable ways. Concurrently, state level policy directing the state to find a replacement for the national measure signals growing interest in establishing a Maine-based approach to measuring food insecurity. Full Plates is the backbone organization working to address childhood food insecurity under Maine’s Ending Hunger Initiative, facilitating the Hunger Free Maine coalition, and convening partners to find a new way to track food insecurity rates in Maine through the Ending Hunger in Maine Food Security Data Project.
