POSITION SUMMARY
The Manager of Transportation and Grounds is responsible for planning, directing, and supervising all transportation services and grounds maintenance operations. This position ensures the safe, efficient, and cost-effective transportation of students while maintaining school grounds, athletic fields, parking lots, and outdoor facilities in a safe, attractive, and functional condition. The manager works closely with school administrators, maintenance staff, contractors, and regulatory agencies to support the school’s educational mission.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Transportation Management
- Direct and oversee all student transportation operations, including regular bus routes, special education transportation, field trips, extracurricular activities, and emergency transportation.
- Develop and maintain efficient bus routes and schedules.
- Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local transportation regulations.
- Supervise transportation staff, including drivers.
- Coordinate driver recruitment, hiring, training, certification, and performance evaluations.
- Monitor transportation safety programs and investigate accidents and incidents.
- Maintain transportation records, vehicle inspections, licensing, and required reports.
- Oversee preventive maintenance and repair schedules for buses and district vehicles.
- Respond to transportation concerns from parents, staff, and the community.
- Manage transportation budgets and monitor expenditures.
- Drive busses as needed and in emergency situations
- Plus any additional work as directed by the Director of Facilities
Grounds Management
- Plan, organize, and supervise the maintenance of all school grounds, athletic fields, landscaping, irrigation systems, parking lots, sidewalks, and playgrounds.
- Ensure school grounds meet safety and environmental standards.
- Coordinate pest control, tree maintenance, drainage, and erosion control activities.
- Work along side maintenance staff to assist with their activities and assist with grounds activities
- Oversee maintenance of outdoor equipment and vehicles.
- Monitor inventory of grounds supplies, equipment, and materials.
- Plus any additional work as directed by the Director of Facilities
Leadership and Administration
- Prepare and administer departmental budgets.
- Develop departmental policies and procedures.
- Ensure compliance with OSHA, environmental regulations, and school district policies.
- Coordinate emergency preparedness related to transportation and grounds operations.
- Collaborate with school administrators regarding facility needs and special events.
- Prepare reports for district leadership and the Board of Education.
- Evaluate staff performance and provide professional development opportunities.
- Promote a culture of safety, customer service, and continuous improvement.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Public Administration, Transportation Management, Facilities Management, or a related field preferred.
- Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Experience
- Minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in transportation, facilities, grounds management, or school operations.
- Supervisory or management experience required.
- Experience in a school setting is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of pupil transportation laws and regulations.
- Knowledge of grounds maintenance practices, landscaping, and athletic field management.
- Knowledge of fleet management and preventive maintenance.
- Strong leadership, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
- Proficiency in transportation routing software, Microsoft Office, and computerized maintenance management systems.
- Ability to analyze budgets and operational data.
- Strong customer service and conflict-resolution skills.
Licenses and Certifications
- Valid driver's license required.
- Commercial Driver's License (CDL) preferred or ability to obtain with in 3 months of hire date
Physical Requirements
- Ability to walk school grounds and construction sites.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Ability to inspect buses, equipment, and facilities.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Office, transportation facilities, and outdoor work environments.
- Occasional evening and weekend work.
- Availability during emergencies, severe weather events, and school closures.
Hours
- Hours vary upon day-to-day operations; will be discussed in the interview (Generally 8:00 - 4:30 M-F)
- Some weekends and evenings as needed
- Emergency calls as needed

Pay: $25.00 - $30.00 per hour
