Location: Gunnison Schools
GENERAL FUNCTION
The School Nurse shall support and enhance the learning process by promoting optimal student health and wellness. The nurse will assess and address student health needs, identify conditions that may interfere with learning, and advocate for appropriate care and services. Through a comprehensive school health program, the nurse will provide direct care, health education, and service coordination to ensure students are safe, healthy, and ready to learn. The nurse will collaborate with school staff, administration, families, and community providers to support student success and well-being.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The School Nurse shall:
Abide by professional nursing standards and ethical guidelines.
Serve as a health advocate for students, promoting equity, access, and student well-being.
Provide first aid and basic medical care to students and staff.
Administer medications in accordance with school policy and physician orders.
Monitor and manage student health plans, including chronic conditions such as asthma, diabetes, and severe allergies.
Maintain accurate, confidential student health records and documentation.
Conduct required health screenings (e.g., vision, hearing) and follow up as needed.
Respond to medical emergencies and coordinate care with emergency services when necessary.
Promote health education and wellness practices among students and staff.
Communicate effectively with parents/guardians regarding student health concerns and needs.
Ensure compliance with state and district health regulations and reporting requirements.
Collaborate with school staff to support student health needs and minimize barriers to learning.
Participate in relevant meetings, including Individualized Education Plan (IEP) and 504 meetings, as appropriate.
Serve as a liaison between the school, home, and community healthcare providers.
Support communicable disease prevention and management within the school setting.
Assist in developing and maintaining a safe and healthy school environment.
Pursue ongoing professional growth and development.
Perform other duties as assigned by the school principal and/or district health coordinator.
NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the principal.

The incumbent is required to perform other related functions as assigned. Other related functions can be performed for no more than 20 percent of an employee’s normal workweek.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Current Registered Nurse (RN) license (required)
CPR and First Aid certification (required)
Experience in pediatrics, school nursing, or community health (preferred)
Strong communication and organizational skills
Ability to work independently and maintain confidentiality
Requires a cleared criminal background check.
