Job Summary
We are seeking a dedicated Surgical Scrub Technician to join our dynamic healthcare team on a part-time basis. Hours will be every Tuesday with additional hours available as needed. Compensation will be dependent upon experience.
In this vital role, you will provide essential support in the operating room by preparing and maintaining sterile surgical environments, handling surgical instruments, and assisting surgeons during procedures. Your expertise will ensure the highest standards of patient safety, infection control, and operational efficiency. The ideal candidate will possess comprehensive knowledge of surgical techniques, instrumentation, and hospital protocols to facilitate smooth surgical workflows across diverse specialties including trauma, pediatrics, and critical care settings.
Responsibilities
- Prepare operating rooms by sterilizing and arranging surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment according to aseptic techniques and infection prevention standards.
- Assist surgeons during procedures by passing instruments, suturing, and managing surgical tools efficiently.
- Maintain accurate documentation of surgical procedures in electronic health record (EHR) systems such as Epic or other EMR platforms.
- Monitor vital signs and patient status during surgery, ensuring adherence to safety protocols.
- Handle the sterilization and maintenance of medical equipment and surgical instruments in compliance with hospital policies.
- Support data collection related to surgical outcomes, infection rates, and procedural metrics for quality improvement initiatives.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including anesthesia, nursing, and radiology to optimize patient care during operative procedures.
- Ensure compliance with hospital policies on healthcare infection prevention and control, aseptic technique, and treatment of fractures or trauma-related injuries.
- Assist with endoscopy procedures and other specialized interventions requiring precise instrument handling.
- Maintain a thorough understanding of anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology relevant to surgical practice.
Qualifications
- Certification as a Surgical Technologist or equivalent credential required.
- Prior experience in hospital environments such as Level I or Level II Trauma Centers preferred; ambulatory surgery center experience is advantageous.
- Demonstrated proficiency in handling surgical instruments, suturing techniques, and sterile procedures.
- Knowledge of medical equipment operation, sterilization processes, and infection control practices.
- Familiarity with EMR/EHR systems such as Epic or similar platforms for documentation purposes.
- Strong understanding of anatomy, physiology, trauma care protocols, and critical care principles.
- Experience working within pediatric (pediatrics), intensive care units (ICU), or emergency medicine settings is highly desirable.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required; additional certifications in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) or Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) are a plus.
- Excellent attention to detail, analysis skills for data collection purposes, and ability to work effectively under pressure in acute care environments.
