Colorado Teacher License with Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) endorsement – Ages 0–8
Colorado's current Early Childhood Special Education endorsement authorizes educators to work with students ages 0–8. The endorsement is therefore appropriate for Special Education Teachers assigned to early childhood/preschool special education classrooms.
Colorado's current ECSE endorsement pathway requires completion of an approved Early Childhood Special Education program from a regionally accredited institution that includes student teaching and practicum, along with the required content-knowledge examination requirements. CDE currently lists:
- Praxis 5024 – Education of Young Children, passing score 160, or approved Multiple Measures evidence.
- Praxis 5205 – Teaching Reading, passing score 159, or approved Multiple Measures evidence.
- Praxis 5692 – Early Childhood Special Education, passing score 159, or approved Multiple Measures evidence.
- Praxis 5691 may be accepted if taken before August 31, 2023, through August 31, 2028.
Colorado also provides an added-endorsement pathway for certain current Colorado professional teacher-license holders who already hold an Early Childhood Education or Special Education Generalist endorsement.
A standard Special Education Generalist endorsement (ages 5–21) alone should not be listed as sufficient for a preschool/ECE special education assignment.
Because this position specifically serves early childhood students, the candidate must have the appropriate Colorado authorization for the 0–8 age range, such as the Early Childhood Special Education endorsement. Colorado identifies Special Education Generalist as ages 5–21, while ECSE covers ages 0–8.
Colorado law requires a Colorado license or authorization for employment as a teacher in a Colorado public school, and the license/authorization must be endorsed for the appropriate developmental level and specialization.
