Position Summary
We are seeking a reliable and detail-oriented Telecommunications Technician to support communications infrastructure at School District of Philadelphia facilities. This position is employed by a contracted telecommunications services provider and involves on-site work in schools and administrative buildings to install, maintain, and troubleshoot Avaya and Mitel voice systems, public address systems, and related telecommunications equipment.
The technician will respond to service tickets, work directly with school staff, and ensure accurate real-time status updates within the School District of Philadelphia ticketing system.
Key Responsibilities
Installation & Setup
- Install and configure telecommunications equipment, including Mitel controllers, Avaya systems, Bogen paging equipment, NVT Phybridge switches, and UPS systems
- Run, terminate, label, and test copper and low-voltage cabling
- Install telephones, speakers, and related peripherals
- Establish and verify network connections supporting voice and public address systems
Maintenance & Repair
- Troubleshoot and resolve outages related to telephony and paging systems
- Diagnose and repair damaged cabling and telecommunications equipment
- Perform routine preventive maintenance to ensure system reliability
Testing & Verification
- Test installed or repaired equipment to confirm proper functionality
- Verify service delivery prior to job completion
Customer Service & Documentation
- Work professionally with school staff and administrators to identify issues and explain resolutions
- Provide basic technical assistance and guidance on equipment usage
- Accurately document work performed and maintain real-time status updates in the School District of Philadelphia ticketing system
Required Skills & Attributes
- Proven reliability and punctuality
- Previous experience in telecommunications, networking, IT, or related technical fields, or comparable education
- Working knowledge of voice and data networks, public address systems, and telecommunications hardware
- Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and critical-thinking skills
- Ability to prioritize tasks, multitask, and meet deadlines
- Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills
- Clear verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Physical capability to lift equipment, climb ladders, and work in confined spaces or at heights
Experience & Requirements
- Minimum 3 years of telecommunications or networking experience (required)
- Must have a valid driver’s license and provide a reliable personal vehicle for work-related travel - no gas/mileage reimbursements will be provided
- Ability to pass multiple background checks required for work in schools and other client facilities
Work Environment
- On-site work at School District of Philadelphia schools, administrative buildings, and data centers
- May involve work in ceiling spaces, equipment rooms, and other non-office environments
Schedule
- Monday through Friday
- Day shift: 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM
- Standard 8-hour shifts
