Occasional after-hours, overnight, holiday, and on-site work may be required for special events, Night Journey programs, camp operations, or other operational needs as defined by museum priorities.
Rate of Pay: $50,000 - $55,000
The Assistant Manager of Education supports the implementation, coordination, and daily operations of educational programming at the EcoTarium, with a primary focus on Night Journey overnight programs, camps, vacation week programming, and out-of-school-time (OST) initiatives. This position works closely with the Senior Manager of Education to ensure engaging, safe, mission-driven, and high-quality learning experiences for youth and families.
This role supports program logistics, staff coordination, scheduling, training, curriculum implementation, and frontline teaching. The Assistant Manager is a collaborative and hands-on team member who regularly interacts with guests, students, educators, caregivers, volunteers, and seasonal staff.
The position is expected to actively facilitate and support educational programming during evenings, weekends, overnights, school vacation weeks, and summer camp seasons. The Assistant Manager may supervise Night Journey and seasonal program staff as assigned but does not serve as a primary supervisor for the broader Education team.
The Assistant Manager also supports the continued development of youth-centered STEM experiences aligned with the EcoTarium’s mission, educational standards, and strategic priorities.
Essential Functions
Night Journey, Camp, & OST Program Coordination
- Support the planning and daily implementation of Night Journey overnight programs, camps, vacation week programs, OST initiatives, and youth/family engagement activities
- Assist with scheduling, supply preparation, setup and cleanup, participant communication, and staff/volunteer coordination
- Ensure programs maintain high standards for safety, accessibility, engagement, and guest experience
- Ensure regulatory compliance of all camp, overnight, and OST programming
- Assist with camp operations and caregiver communications as needed
Program Facilitation & Frontline Teaching
- Facilitate educational programming for school groups, families, camp participants, overnight guests, and public audiences
- Provide operational and teaching support during peak program seasons, staff absences, evenings, weekends, and overnights
- Model best practices in youth engagement, informal science education, classroom management, and inquiry-based teaching
- Support gallery experiences, tabletop activities, and public engagement opportunities
- Lead and/or support special programming during themed events and exhibit openings
Staff & Volunteer Support
- Support onboarding, training, and mentoring of seasonal educators, camp counselors, volunteers, and Night Journey staff
- Provide operational leadership during assigned programs and shifts
- Assist with schedule coordination and day-to-day staff support
- Help foster a collaborative, inclusive, and mission-driven team culture
- Supervise seasonal or Night Journey staff as assigned
Curriculum & Program Development
- Assist with the development and adaptation of curriculum and educational materials for camps, overnight programs, OST initiatives, school and group programs, and public STEM activities
- Ensure program alignment with inquiry-based learning practices, Massachusetts curriculum frameworks, NGSS standards, and museum education best practices
- Integrate astronomy, nature, engineering, and space science themes into youth programming
Community Engagement & Operations Support
- Represent the EcoTarium during programs, outreach opportunities, and community events
- Assist with maintaining program supplies, educational materials, and activity spaces
- Support attendance tracking, evaluations, reporting, and operational coordination within Education and across departments
- Maintain flexibility to support evolving programmatic and operational needs
- Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including weekends, holidays, evenings, and overnight coverage
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor’s degree in education, science, museum studies, youth development, or related field; or equivalent experience
- 2–4 years of experience in youth programming, informal education, camps, museums, after-school programs, or related settings including supervision of staff, volunteers, or interns
- Experience working directly with children and families
- Experience with licensed program administration regulated by DPH, EEC, or equivalent
- Strong facilitation, communication, organizational, and teamwork skills
- Ability to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and overnight programs as needed
- Clear CORI, SORI, and other background or reference checks as required by the EcoTarium or childcare regulations
Preferred
- Experience with overnight programs, camps, or OST programming
- Experience in museum education, science education, or informal STEM learning environments
- Experience coordinating schedules, logistics, or program operations
- Experience supervising seasonal staff or volunteers
- Knowledge of inquiry-based and experiential learning practices
- Experience with astronomy, nature, environmental education, or physical science programming
- Bilingual or multilingual skills
