Structural Engineering Project Manager
Position Summary
The Structural Engineering Project Manager leads the technical execution, coordination, and delivery of structural engineering projects from proposal through construction completion. This role is responsible for managing client relationships, project teams, technical quality, and project execution while partnering closely with the Operations Manager on project scheduling, proposal development, resource planning, and budget management. The Structural Engineering Project Manager serves as the primary point of contact for clients, consultants, and internal stakeholders, ensuring successful project delivery and exceptional client service.
Key Responsibilities
Project Management
- Manage structural engineering projects through all phases of design and construction.
- Coordinate with the Operations Manager to develop and maintain project schedules, staffing plans, and project delivery objectives.
- Monitor project progress and communicate scope, budget, and schedule performance with the Operations Manager.
- Coordinate internal project teams to ensure timely completion of project milestones.
- Facilitate project kickoff meetings and ongoing project coordination efforts.
- Maintain project documentation and ensure compliance with firm quality standards.
Client and Team Coordination
- Serve as the primary point of contact for clients throughout the project lifecycle.
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with clients, architects, contractors, and consultants.
- Lead project meetings and provide clear communication regarding project status, design decisions, and project requirements.
- Coordinate multidisciplinary efforts with architects, MEP engineers, civil engineers, and specialty consultants.
- Identify and resolve project issues through effective collaboration and communication.
- Ensure client expectations are understood and communicated to the project team.
Structural Design Leadership
- Direct and oversee the structural design process for a variety of project types.
- Review structural calculations, specifications, reports, and construction documents for technical accuracy and completeness.
- Provide engineering judgment and technical guidance to project teams.
- Ensure compliance with applicable building codes, industry standards, and client requirements.
- Support value engineering efforts and development of practical, efficient structural solutions.
- Maintain quality control throughout the design and documentation process.
Team Leadership and Mentorship
- Lead project teams consisting of engineers, EITs, and drafting consultants.
- Delegate project tasks and monitor workload distribution.
- Mentor EIT’s and promote professional development.
- Provide guidance on technical challenges, project execution, and client communications.
- Foster a collaborative and positive team environment.
- Assist with employee development and performance feedback.
Construction Administration
- Oversee structural Construction Administration activities, including review of shop drawings, submittals, RFIs, field conditions, and site visits.
- Assist in resolving construction-phase issues while maintaining design intent and project objectives.
- Ensure timely and accurate documentation of construction-related activities.
- Coordinate with contractors, owners, and consultants during the construction process.
Business Development and Client Service
- Support proposal preparation, fee development, and contract negotiations in coordination with the Operations Manager and Principal Engineer.
- Participate in project scoping and assist with development of project work plans and resource requirements.
- Identify opportunities for repeat business and client growth.
- Participate in networking, business development, and industry events.
- Assist with client presentations and project interviews.
- Promote the firm's reputation for technical excellence and responsive service.
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering with a Structural Engineering emphasis or related field.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license.
- Minimum of 6 years of structural engineering experience.
- Demonstrated project management experience on structural engineering projects.
- Strong understanding of structural design principles, building systems, and applicable codes.
- Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Strong organizational and leadership abilities.
- Familiarity with RAM, Revit, or similar software.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.
Preferred
- Structural Engineer (SE) license.
- Experience managing residential, commercial, institutional, industrial, healthcare, or public-sector projects.
- Proven track record of client relationship management and business development.
Reporting and Collaboration
- Reports to Principal Engineer.
- Works closely with the Operations Manager to coordinate project staffing, scheduling, budgeting, and proposal development.
- Works closely with structural engineering staff, architects, contractors, consultants, and clients throughout project delivery.
- Collaborates with firm leadership on project performance, resource planning, and strategic growth initiatives.
Work Environment
- Combination of office-based project management, engineering coordination, and periodic site visits.
- Local and regional travel for client meetings, site observations, and project coordination may be required.
Pay: $84,000.00 - $120,000.00 per year
