Performance Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Billing Assistant to join our growing orthopedic practice. The ideal candidate will provide exceptional customer service while supporting both front office operations and the billing department. This position requires excellent communication skills, strong organizational abilities, and the capacity to work independently in a fast-paced medical environment.
Essential Responsibilities
Front Office Support
- Answer and triage incoming telephone calls, directing callers to the appropriate department when necessary.
- Schedule patient appointments according to practice scheduling guidelines.
- Verify insurance participation and ensure required referrals or authorizations are obtained when applicable.
- Register patients accurately in Athena EMR by entering demographic and insurance information from registration forms or information provided verbally.
- Maintain the confidentiality of patient, financial, and health information in accordance with HIPAA regulations.
- Provide backup coverage for patient check-in and check-out as needed.
Billing Responsibilities
- Enter daily charges accurately and timely.
- Submit and process insurance claims.
- Respond to billing-related phone calls, voicemail messages, and patient portal inquiries.
- Process DME/HA prior authorizations.
- Handle insurance requests and documentation.
- Process viscosupplement authorization requests.
- Check, distribute, and scan billing-related mail.
- Process Workers' Compensation request.
- Manage claims through the Main Office Dashboard.
Qualifications
- Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills with patients, providers, and insurance companies.
- Knowledge of medical terminology is required.
- Billing experience required; Orthopedic billing experience is preferred but not required.
- Experience with Athena EMR is a plus.
- Medical billing certification is preferred.
- Strong computer and organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail.
- Ability to prioritize multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
- Dependable, reliable, and resourceful with a commitment to accuracy and thoroughness.
- Ability to work independently while demonstrating strong problem-solving and critical-thinking skills.
