Thrift Store Cashier and Donation Sorter | Part-Time
Location: Soddy Daisy (10161 Dayton Pike, Soddy-Daisy, TN 37379)
Schedule: Part-Time | Monday – Saturday | 23-25 Hours a Week
Pay: $15.00 per hour | Non-Exempt

Our Thrift Stores play a critical role in supporting this mission by providing affordable clothing and household items to our community and generating revenue to fund our programs and services. Position Summary: The Thrift Store Cashier and Donation Sorter is a key player in ensuring a positive shopping experience for our customers. You’ll operate the cash register, assist customers, maintain an orderly sales floor, and help sort and process donations. Our store is constantly buzzing with community donations, so we need someone who thrives in a dynamic environment, thinks quickly on their feet, and can prioritize effectively while working in a sea of boxes and bags. Whether you are running the register or sorting through incoming treasures, your speed, adaptability, and keen eye keep our store operating smoothly and directly fund NNH's mission.

What You’ll Do:
- Receive, inspect, and sort high volumes of incoming donations in a fast-paced environment.
- Evaluate items to select high-quality goods for the sales floor, route recyclable materials appropriately, and discard unusable items.
- Keep processing areas organized and moving—getting popular items priced, tagged, and out onto the floor quickly to maximize sales.
- Adapt seamlessly between donor drop-offs, backroom sorting, and floor restocking based on immediate store traffic and volume spikes.
- Process cash, card, and digital transactions quickly and accurately while keeping check-out lines moving smoothly.
- Greet shoppers and donors with warmth, patience, and enthusiasm, offering assistance and answering questions.
- Help maintain an organized, attractive sales floor by straightening displays, color-coding racks, and restocking fresh merchandise.
- Monitor register and entry areas to ensure a safe environment, moving recyclables, donations, and trash as needed.
What You Bring to the Table:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- At least 1 year of cashier experience
- Previous customer service experience
- Ability to communicate calmly and clearly with diverse groups of people
- Patience and empathy when working with people from all socio-economic backgrounds
- Ability to take initiative, work independently, and notice tasks that need to be done
- Ability to handle cash accurately and navigate POS systems comfortably.
- Willingness to work cooperatively with all agency staff

Physical Requirements:
- Able to stand for long periods (up to 6-8 hours per shift)
- Able to stoop, bend, lift, push, and pull up to—and sometimes over—50 pounds
- Frequent, near-constant movement of arms and legs (sorting, lifting, carrying boxes/bags)
- Hand/finger dexterity to grip bags, boxes, hangers, tags, and forms of payment.
- Comfort working around pre-owned items that may contain dust or mold
- Vision and hearing necessary to operate POS systems, assess donor goods, and engage with shoppers
Equipment/Technology:
- Must be able to use a computer and point-of-sale (POS) systems
- Ability to learn and adapt to new software
Work Schedule:
- 23-25 hours per week, Monday through Saturday (Store shifts scheduled between 9:30 AM – 6:15 PM).
- Schedules are prepared monthly and provided at least one week in advance
