Why does the job exist?
The New Mexico Department of Wildlife's Skills Development program leads the Department's effort to provide hands-on skills for the general public. The public has expressed interest in learning how to safely recreate in the outdoors. This position is responsible for creating opportunities for novices to learn basic skills and for current participants to learn more hands-on skills, increasing their comfort level for recreating in the outdoors. This includes coordinating programs that can be duplicated and shared with volunteers and contractors.
How does it get done?
The Hunter, Angler, and Outdoor Skills Development Coordinator position requires experience developing and producing virtual and in-person courses to help people develop introductory and intermediate skills.
- Provide hunting and fishing workshops designed to increase participation within the license-buying community.
- Develop virtual and in-person skills development workshops and camps that are designed for novice and beginner hunters and anglers.
- Employ R3 strategies to recruit, retain, and reactivate individuals into a variety of activities.
- Provide workshops including introductory skills designed to enhance their hunting and fishing experiences that could include using tools such as mapping to navigate their trip, getting tips from experienced recreationalists, developing skills from preparing for the hunt to staying legal and safe while in the field, fishing, identifying fish, choosing appropriate tackle, and engaging in outdoor recreation, including ethical resource use.
- Build relationships with partners, volunteers, and contractors that can help drive successful workshops and camps.
- Teach and assist with hunter education classes and assist with related administrative duties.
- Support and assist educational program managers with large public events, including large events, Outdoor Adventure Show, Youth Hunter Education Challenges, R3 and marketing efforts, Archery programs, off-highway vehicle safety and awareness programs, conservation education programs, fish and wildlife projects, marketing and informational efforts, etc.

Minimum Qualification
Associate's Degree and three (3) years of experience in program administration or project management in areas related to the purpose of the position. Any combination of education and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling five (5) years may substitute for the required education and experience.
Employment Requirements
Pre-employment background investigation is required and is conditional pending results. Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment.
Working Conditions
Work will be performed primarily in an office or indoor setting, but on occasion will be performed in the outdoors during all types of weather conditions and in close proximity to fish and wildlife. Weekend and varied hours occasionally will be required for this position. Work will include sitting, standing, bending, and lifting up to 60 pounds. Requirements will include frequent travel, working weekends and evenings, driving state vehicles and pulling cargo trailers, and may occasionally include OHV operation and aircraft travel.
